I kind of want Posh to be my new BFF.

Did anyone else kind of love Victoria Beckham on American Idol last night? This was my first exposure to her as a person, and I was pleasantly surprised. I mean, yeah, she didn't say that much, but I think a lot of that was due to her having trouble breaking into the other judges' dynamic (and actually, as a side note, watching VB struggle with that gave me a new respect for Kara, who did it a lot more seamlessly last year).

But the thing about Victoria is that I always assumed she was an uber-bitch because she just LOOKS so sharp and pointy and stand-offish, and her outfits are always SO high-fashion, but I was so impressed at how NICE she was. She just... was REAL. And friendly, and smart. I wished the other judges would let her talk a bit more because I found myself really wanting to hear what she had to say.

I mean, watching her, I could totally see her as a mother, and a good one at that, and that's something I never understood about her before.

My question is, did everyone in England already know this, and we Americans weren't in on the secret? Or, for that matter, did everyone in the US already know this and I was out of the loop? Or does everyone else still think she's totally frigid and I'm just living in my own parallel universe?

AND, if it turns out that people agree with me, do you think this one night of exposure on American Idol will help her establish more of a fan base in the US?

The funny thing about this is that until last night, I wouldn't have even CARED. But now I feel bizarrely INVESTED. I LIKE her. I don't know what it is!

  1. VB is hilarious -- watch Ali G interview her back in the day and you will really love her!

  2. I'm so out of the loop that I didn't even know American Idol was on last night. Shows that air more than once a week are just too much for me to keep track of. Then again, the only show I really watch when it actually airs is How I Met Your Mother. For the handful of other shows I watch I either use on demand or hulu.

  3. I'm totally with you Jess! I thought she was so nice, and I wasn't expecting that at all. Unfortunately, I thought AI was really boring last night. Not enough funny, too much "feel sorry for this person." I'll watch it a few more times, and if it doesn't get better I'm moving on.

  4. I love Victoria Beckham. When they had their reality show, I was impressed with how much her family and kids meant to her. I think you could see that nice-ness on AI last night. I think Simon is one of those people who talks before he thinks sometimes...So she was refreshing to say the least.
How about the guy who got over cancer and had those piercing blue eyes...what a story!

  5. Guess I'd have to care about American Idol to know what you're talking about. Eh?

  6. That's how I felt after seeing her judge on Project Runway.

  7. I don't know who she is really other than a Spice Girl (right?) and I never liked them. I don't watch Idol. LOL

  8. I know others have done it before too, but I loved how she used a "mom tone" when calling him out on how Simon rolls his eyes at people. I can just see her saying "Don't you roll your eyes at me!" to one of her kids. LOL.
I agree. It's funny, because I fully admit that I loved the Spice Girls, and I constantly forget that she was one of them because she seems so...like you said; pointy, and high fashion and stuff. But seeing her on AI definitely made me rethink my opinion on her. Which just goes to show (once again); you can't judge a book by its cover.

  9. I only saw a bit of it but I just loved her. She is indeed very posh (I think she has a great sense of style) but she also seemed sweet.

  10. I liked her too, and she doesn't look like the kind of celebrity I would like at all. But when she talks she seems really nice. Yep, I like her.

  11. I've liked her for awhile now, after seeing her in some interviews (my boyfriend is a huge David Beckham fan, so I'd seen her on Ali G years ago - the video Devon linked to in the first comment). I remember really starting to like her even more whenever she was on the Ellen Degeneres show. She is able to make fun of herself, she loves her sons and husband, and she just seems so... nice!

I agree that she LOOKS like she'd be such a bitch, but then when she speaks -- man! Sign me up to hang out with her any day!

I didn't watch American Idol last night, because I really only like the show once they pick their top 12 or 10 or whatever and do the actual performances.

  12. She does have kinda a "snotty face". Not to be all judgey...but her looks - pointy looks - are snotty looking too. I didn't see idol, but may have to watch to see if she has some warmth to her personality that I have missed.

  13. OMG OMG OMG ME TOO! I just adored her. I had the same impression that you did, before last night. I remember watching her and David being interviewed by Barbara Walters or someone a few years ago, and not being all that impressed. Of course, she was being asked questions like "Why don't you smile more when the paparazzi are snapping your picture?" and "You are so thin. Do you ever eat a cookie?" (NOT KIDDING). If someone were asking me this questions, I doubt I'd be all friendly and warm and nice either.

Point being, yes, LOVED HER and was very pleasantly surprised. I admit I was judging her non-smiley looks and was happy to be proven wrong!

  14. I don't watch AI, or really know about VB but I agree that she SEEMS all pointy. Glad to hear she seems nice after all.

  15. I think I hate her just based on her pictures. She always looks so angry! But I don't watch AI so I can't help you out with the personality part.

  16. I was surprised also. Talk about judging a book by its cover- I did that with her. I liked her feedback and approach to people. Kara is very ballsy so it would make sense that she would just plow her way through as a new judge. I'm interested to see who else they have lined up.

  17. Looks like not everyone agreed with you

  18. I haven't seen any footage of her on idol but this was exactly the same experience I had when I first saw a real interview with her.

She is nice and witty and smart!

  19. I totally agree! I found myself saying "wow, who knew she actually talked!?!?!"

And, I loved when she complimented that one girl's outfit, when it was just jeans, a white t-shirt, and a blazer!

  20. Shoot now I'm bummed I didn't watch because I've always thought the same thing- pointy and sharp. Hmmm...

  21. It's funny you ask! My beau (that I keep talking about but not elaborating on) is from Wales and we've talked about her before and I got the impression that she's percieved as cold and "pointy" there also. I mean, she never smiles! And she wears shoes that could kill a person! I'm sure she's a lovely person she just seems so NOT lovely. I guess it just goes to show that you can't judge a book by it's cover, huh?

  22. I didn't catch it, but now I feel like I should google a clip

    hmm...

  23. I only just noticed your new profile photo! Love it!

I always thought of her as sharp and pointy and fashionable, too, until I saw an interview with her where she said she thinks everyone thinks of her as a sullen cow because she never smiles and she was going to work on that, and something about the way she said it (which is not coming through in the way I'm relating it) made her seem so funny and also made me feel like I GOT something about her. (Kind of like when I heard Britney Spears's song "Piece of Me" and I was like ohhhhhhhhhhhh I think I DO get why fame is kind of a pain!)

  24. Hmm. Missed her on AI last night, I just can't dedicate that much time to one show. ( I have too much other trash tv to watch!)

VB is funny, especially in the Ali G stuff. She and Becks have been living in the US for the past several years since Becks started playing for the LA Galaxy. I am not sure why or what she would need a larger fan base for though. She is already pretty famous?

I always think of her as this:

And am surprised with the current sharp and angular VB. Seems so different.

  25. I totally love her, too. I have always openly admitted my love for the Spice Girls and she was always my favorite. And she has evolved into such a sophisticated...icon almost. I've read interviews that she's done, and if you didn't know who she was or what she looked like, you would think she was just a sweety, shy, almost mousy woman and she always says the sweetest things about how she and David met, and about her adorable little guys. I'm definitely a fan. I'm bummed that I'll likely miss out on most of this season since we don't have TV, but I can watch it online so I might have to do that tonight!

  26. I don't watch American Idol so I can't judge VB, but I remember thinking that Heather Armstrong would be more snide and snarky and have more of a nasal sounding voice because of how skinny and pointed her features are. I remember being so surprised at how warm and fuzzy she was at her booksigning in Powell's. I wonder if it's just an aesthetic thing. We expect people who look like they are built out of angles to be...sharp and pointy. Kind of like how we expect books with pastel covers to be smooshy and romancey?

  27. Well now I'm curious and may have to find video of Idol last night (I'm not a regular viewer)!

  28. I fell in love with her a few years back when she did her reality show. She's so likeable!

  29. Clearly I don't even know who posh is....i'm watching mary j blige and just called HER posh, and my husband is like, what the hell is wrong with you????? Ahem, don't know my celebrities.

  30. Seriously? Victoria Beckham? Nice person?

Apparently I didn't watch AI since your night is pretty much my morning here and due to holiday, I woke up pretty late ( like noon-ish late, so embarrassing ) but hey, I would watch the re-run. I'm sure a bunch of people would upload footages or some kind in youtube too. Can't wait to see what you mean, I always between hated her ( for personality ) and loved her ( for her clothes ). I wanna see the different side of her too :)

  31. i agree 100% about VB. LOVED her..yet previous to this show, had a negative (though clearly uninformed) opinion about her. And after tonight, I love Mary J. Blige a little less..which makes me sad, cause i love her music, but she was kinda mean...lots of immature snickering, etc.

  32. You're right, she was surprisingly sweet. I loved how she wanted to say positive things to each person, totally did not expect her to be like that either!
