Things I've discovered recently

1. I like popcorn. I always thought I didn't, but over Christmas I tried some of my mom's and it was delicious. It's even better with nutritional yeast. Is that common knowledge, or is it something that most people don't know? Torsten thinks nutritional yeast is disgusting. I think he's crazy.

2. The huge work project that I've been working on is no longer due tomorrow. It's been extended by two weeks. Which is awesome, since I spent three days of my five-day weekend working on it. But now we are way ahead of schedule, so I guess that makes it worthwhile. Still, I'd kind of like to have my weekend back.

3. Not getting to say "I do" pales in comparison to the comedy of errors that was Obama taking the oath of office on Tuesday. First he interrupts Roberts. Then Roberts puts the word "faithfully" in the wrong place. Then Obama realizes the error and stops midsentence. Then Roberts tries again, puts "faithfully" in the right place, but forgets the word "execute." Then Obama repeats the phrase fully, but uses the incorrect version that Roberts gave the first time. A couple of newbies, those two. I was just imagining how much worse our ceremony would have been if our officiant had bumbled along and botched our vow prompts like that instead of just dropping part of it. Let's just hope that Obama gets reelected so that he gets a chance to do it right the next time, huh?

4. I should really be trying more new recipes. In preparation for quitting Weight Watchers, I've been printing out all the recipes I may want to use, and have found quite a few that look very tasty. Trying new things might help me break out of my rut, too. But it will also involve more thoughtful grocery shopping and effort at the end of a long workday. We'll see how this one plays out. Maybe just one new recipe per week to start with. Ease into it, so to speak.

5. DC has swimming pools ("aquatic centers") that are free to residents and apparently very nice. Swimming is my favorite kind of exercise, and I think it's about time that I found an exercise that I actually enjoyed WHILE I was doing it and not just after. I'm going to have to figure out a way to get myself to one of those aquatic centers on a regular basis.

6. I can have a serious one-track mind. I feel like I'm going in circles right now, waiting to land. And air traffic control keeps pushing me back in the queue.

  1. That is awesome about the aquatic centers! I wish we had that here. Ours are private and very expensive - or you can go to the Y, but unfortunately there's not one nearby with a pool. I'm with ya, swimming is one of my favorite activities.

  2. I have only two words for you.

    Kettle Corn.

Go forth and have joyful popcorn affairs.

  3. I love popcorn too. I like it plain with a little salt, but also with toppings, like parmesan cheese and chili powder. Yum.

That's great that the aquatic centres are free. We have quite a few around here and they're not expensive at all.

  5. I love popcorn. I'm with tara that kettle corn is awesome, but some people don't like it. I wish we had free aquatic centers.

  6. My family make popcorn with a sprinkling of icing sugar. I know that's not so good with regards to the whole weightloss thing but YUM! My indian neighbours used to put indian herbs on theirs which was also fantastic but I'm not sure which herbs/spices they used.

  9. I love popcorn... generally the unhealthy kind slathered in butter and salt :)

So what exactly *is* Nutritional Yeast. The only yeast I know is the stuff I use to bake bread, and I can't imagine putting that on popcorn...

  10. I heard this morning that they actually REDID the oath privately at the White House, just in case, since it is in the Constitution word-for-word and all that.

  12. If our wedding officiant forgot to do part of our vows, I'm not sure I would've even noticed. But, our vows were most certainly not sacred text repeated by dozens of presidents before.

  14. You're driving me nuts! What's the news?! Ahhhhh!

  15. I'm a white cheddar popcorn girl myself. Although kettle corn is pretty amazing too. And nutritional yeast eludes me?

If your surprise ends up being something really minor, may I warn you that those of us holding our collective breaths may explode while we wait :)

  17. Nutritional yeast....*shudder*. I'm with Torsten - it is repulsive. My husband could eat popcorn like that every day though.

On the oath note, I heard or read somewhere that they will probably give Obama a do-over but just in the privacy of the Oval Office.

I took one aqua-aerobics class once and it was actually really fun but I never went back because it was on my day off - at 6AM!

  18. When I was trying to lose weight, finding new healthy recipes was crucial! It made cooking and eating healthy food so much more enjoyable.

  19. I used 2 of the aquatic centers in DC and had great experiences with both. The one on Florida between 17th and 18th is indoors but doesn't have that awful indoor pool ordor and the facility was clean. I used the one on 25th and N(ish) during the summer since it is outdoors and while a nicer pool than the first, it has a lot more kids/is noisier/harder to do lap swimming in but great for a "fun" pool day.

  20. A friend of mine is all about nutritional yeast on popcorn. I don't get it. It's not *bad*, but I don't really understand eating it simply for the taste.

I hope some of those tasty WW recipes will end up on your recipe site! :-) I made the Thai coconut chicken (with shrimp and cilantro instead of chicken and basil again) for a boy on Friday, and he went back for seconds. Yay; success.

  21. I love popcorn, but it makes my stomach hurt. :-(

I love to run in the pool because it is difficult and an AWESOME workout.
