To chop or not to chop

I have come to a crossroads. And it involves my hair. I don't know whether to keep growing it out or cut it all off. And by "cut it all off" I mean not short-short, but somewhere between chin and shoulder length.

I've been growing it out for a couple of years now, I guess since my wedding? With the thought that it would be nice to have long hair for awhile, but not necessarily as a permanent state. I like the long hair--it's pretty and fun, and in some ways it's easy because I can just toss it back in a ponytail and be done with it.

But I like short hair too. My hair curls better when it's short, and it's faster to wash, and if I skip a shower one day it doesn't look quite as messy. Also, Callum has started pulling my hair regularly, particularly when he's nursing, and that's quite painful. I wouldn't mind having it out of his way.

People seem to have strong opinions about whether I look better with short hair or long, and unfortunately there's no consensus, so it's hard to decide on that count, too.

Here's my hair currently (or at least recently-ish):

And here's how I wear it most of the time, because it's a mess when it's not freshly washed and also because I want to keep it out of Callum's reach:

And here's how it looked when I wore it short:

And here it is partly grown out, so somewhere in the middle:

So what do you think? Should I keep it as it is, or cut it all off? Or something in between?

  1. Your short hair makes me immediately think "sassy," but in a good way. I think short hair is adorable on you. Go for it.

  2. I agree that short hair looks amazing on you! If you're always wearing it pulled back now, why not go for it?

  3. Short! It will be great for spring/summer, and looks so cute on you. You can always grow it out again.

PS - Super cute lil Callum!

  6. Short! Why keep it long when you're just putting it in a ponytail everyday?

  7. It's so pretty either way, but I say short- you have such a great curl pattern, show it off!

  8. I think you look best with short/medium hair. I ALSO think you'll feel amazing and fresh if you go for the post baby chop. Go for it!

  9. Short!

Did you even think I would say anything different? ;-)

I have kind of a longer face and I noticed when I grew my hair out it just dragged the eye down making my face appear longer. With shorter hair the eye goes straight to the face, the eyes. I think your hair looks great shorter- shows off your face and your curls to their best.

  10. Umm, everyone else has said short but I say long! I think it looks good on you and it's so easy just to pull back in a ponytail. I'm pretty much pro long-hair on everyone, though!

  11. Cut it! I just had my chopped and there's no looking back!

  12. You're beautiful either way! How about short-ish for the summer? I'd leave a little extra length to account for extra curling/shrinking during humid weather. That should also cut down on drying time during the summer.

  13. SHORT! It looks awesome. And short hair is always easier to care for.

  14. Short. Not that it looks bad now, by any means, but that short cut is so good on you!

  15. I LOVE it short on you! I have the same issues you do with my hair, but recently (since I chopped it off in Sept) I've been throwing it up in a bun every day cause I can't deal with it!!

I think a trim is in order for me.

  16. I think it looks GREAT short! But honestly, I have the same dilemma but what makes me keep mine long is that the idea of not being able to throw it back into a poneytail or clip of some kind and have it out of the little ones reach and somewhat presentable sounds awful! Good luck making the decision! and if you do cut it short you'll have to let us know how it goes and if it really is easier

  17. Oh, I like it short! How do you get the curls so perfect? Is it naturally like that?

  18. Ohhhh, I LOVE how it looks short. You have amazing curls.

That being said, I haven't cut my hair shorter because it means I would have to style it every day, and I just can't do that. As long as that isn't an issue for you, I say go for it!

  19. You look great with both long and short hair but my favourite is actually the in-between stage.

  20. Totally on board the short train. I grew my hair out (for the first time in my life) for my wedding, and I almost kissed the sweet Filipino woman who chopped it all off on my honeymoon cruise. Plus the short curls are amazing!

  21. I think you have the kind of hair that looks good either way... For me, I don't want my hair short because then I have to do stuff to it - for now I am committed to the convenience of pulling it back or twisting it up or whatever. My vote would be to go for whatever is less a hassle for you! You will look great either way.

  22. I think it looks good either way, but I LOVE it short. :)

  23. I love short hair on you, but vote for medium so that way if you need to pull it out of Callum's way, you have that option.

You have such great hair by the way!

  24. I know I don't even need to comment but I LOVE your hair in the winter-baby picture. It looks luxurious!! That said, I have always liked your pictures with really short hair. Super cute! And if it's easier/less pulling, I would definitely go with that. :)

    Fun!

  25. I remembered that photo of your short hair! :-) I actually like it BOTH ways, and honestly, if you want to cut it I say go for it. It's about your oomfort level. If Torsten thinks it's hot, who cares what anyone else thinks?
