Hard day's night

I am drowning in work. I didn't finish until 10 p.m. last night and today I somehow need to fit in the editing of a 30-page document around 4 hours of meetings. I'm not quite sure how this is going to happen but I suspect it will involve another late night. I am trying not to be grumpy about this because it happens so rarely and it's good that I have work to do and am valuable to my company.

But it is amazing. It's not that I have one giant project deadline. It's that I have eight separate project deadlines all raining down on me at once, suddenly and urgently. For the first time pretty much ever, I've had to defer editing requests to external consultants not because I'm out of the office but because my workload is simply too much for me to take on any more.

I don't know what I'm even doing writing a blog post right now. I mean, my working hours haven't technically started yet but that doesn't mean that I don't need to get cracking in order to have the slightest chance of not spending all evening doing work. Which is too bad, because I actually really want to write a post over at Bodies about how my latest fill is working out (great, so far, in a nutshell). But that will just have to wait.

Thank god we have a vacation coming up soon. It's starting to look like I'm really going to need it.

In the meantime, distract/entertain me, will you? How's YOUR work going? Feel free to comment anonymously if you feel the need to protect yourself.

  1. September in a university. Busy.

Good luck with all the deadlines!

  2. JOB SECURITY. That's what I always say when things get insanely busy. And given that I have 2 billable projects, a marketing mailing and 2 more non-billable projects on my plate, I should probably get to it. =)

  3. Good luck with your deadlines. It's the end of the quarter, so it's a mix of anxiety and business for me.

  4. I am in the middle of six proposals all due within 3 days. One we got yesterday and it is due today. It took about 3 seconds at work to undue the nice vacation I just took.

I'm in a good mood, though. Go figure.

  5. Lol just head over to my blog, I wrote about the joys of moving "offices" (I refuse to call my new cubbie an office) today!

  6. Have absolutely nothing to do, all day, every day. Too bad you can't outsource some of your work to me!

  7. Oh, my week is going just fine except I've been sneezing all day at work. I hope you get your work done early so you can relax a little.

  8. My work sounds exactly like yours right now. So busy we can hardly breathe. Interesting, since 2 weeks ago we were told there will be layoffs in January if we don't get more contracts. Stressful when we're working our butts off. Two huge contracts end Nov 1 though, which will have a big impact on our finances.

  9. I'm not sure why, but I feel like everyone is drowning in work lately! I work in retail, and the corporate offices decides to start a brand new program in each of the stores- and my store put me in charge. Going to school full time and then coming home to figure out how to make a new program successful is frustrating- but, like it was said up there, JOB SECURITY! :)

  10. I too, thought Oh good! Job security! for you...but whoo boy it can be overwhelming. Hope you get in the zone, get 'er done and make it to vacay soon enough! I'm a SAHW for a lil while and think I really needed it. My time at my old job had run it's course and was taking more out of me than it was rejuvenating me.

  11. Oh I know how that feels. Right now I have a lot of down time, so I'm able to you know, breath, but it won't last forever. Good luck, hope you can just get through it all.

  12. Hang in there!

Fall is always the worst time of year in my line of work. Gah.

I am pretty pumped. I am waiting for the printer's proof of the cookbook I finally finished designing/editing/laying out!! I am super pumped and nervous that suddenly something is very wrong. We'll see!

  13. Job security, yeah. Right. Work is obnoxious right now. I figure on any given day, I'm doing between 2 and 3 full-time jobs, meaning I do nothing fully. Totally frustrating.

And at one point today, when I was handed another project, I walked away repeating silently, "You have a mortgage, you have a mortgage..."

  15. So busy, might die. Or never get to read blogs again. Nearly as bad.

  17. We're drowning too ... I'm in the plastics industry and we're steady ... I'm told we are and always have been a lean company - so there's really no one sitting around looking for something to do. We're all running around like crazy people!

  18. I haven't been blogging much or reading others' posts because it's so frakking busy. October is a killer, I think.

Sorry you're having to work evenings, though. That sux.
