Planning for domesticity

So, the inspection went well. The inspector found some issues, but nothing major, nothing incredibly expensive, and nothing beyond what you would expect to find in a 45-year-old house. There are a few issues that we're definitely going to ask the seller to take care of, but I don't foresee any problems with that.

And, we've been officially approved, not just preapproved, for our mortgage.

So really, this is all proceeding very well and quickly and smoothly, relatively speaking. There's still more paperwork and final costs to work out and the appraisal has to meet or exceed the purchase price, but the biggest things have already happened, and had the right outcome.

So now we move on to logistics. Like, we just unpacked our entire apartment (and I will try to remember to take photos of it before that changes), and now we have to pack it all up again. We just paid a ton for movers, and now we have to do it again. And book them, and insure them, and all the rest.

Though it will be easier this time because we're just moving across town, and for a few weeks we'll be paying rent and mortgage so there's no rush, so we can move all our boxes and stuff ourselves, and only pay to have the furniture moved. So it won't be nearly as expensive or logistically difficult as moving across the country. But still. We just did it. We just need to remind ourselves that this is, hopefully, the last time we'll be doing this, at least for a very long time. I know you can never know what's around the corner, and what amazing opportunity might come up in some other city. But we plan to settle in Denver, and raise our kids here, and we hope that this house will be our final home, our forever home.

And ooo, it will be nice to have a yard so that Montana can go out whenever she wants and we don't have to go down with her and stand there holding her leash and pleading with her to pee.

Speaking of Montana, the vet pointed out that she has quite a bit of tartar buildup and recommended that we brush her teeth, so I bought her a little doggie toothbrush and toothpaste. I didn't notice until I was actually brushing her teeth that the toothpaste was poultry flavored. Am I the only person who finds that really disgusting? The thought of chicken-flavored toothpaste, combined with having her lips pulled back and my hand in her mouth, nearly made me puke. She seemed to like it, though, which almost made my desire to puke worse.

But oh, she is so worth it. I can't even deal with how cute she is, and how sweet, and how loving. When we get home after going out without her, and we let her out of her crate, she literally gallops down the hall to greet whichever one of us didn't go let her out of her crate. Oh, she is so precious. I can't even imagine how I'll feel about kids once we have them.

WHICH, by the way, will NOT be now. I know, we have the house, the dog, the city, etc., and all of you are just WAITING for me to announce my pregnancy, but no, it is not happening yet. I mean, I can't guarantee that accidents won't happen, but barring that? Not just yet. You'll all just have to keep waiting.

  1. I'm with you on the toothpaste. That is pretty revolting.

  2. I'm pretty sure the act of getting pregnant is no accident. But, I do not dare go into the details here. Hee hee. Very excited for your impending move part two. Yay!

  3. aw, montana will LOVE the yard! I find the toothpaste disgusting too. I hope you feel a sense of accomplishment for being able to brush her teeth. When we tried to do that with the puppies, they spent the entire time trying to eat the toothbrush. It was completely unproductive and we have tried since. Good thing they chew on their bones so much!

Congrats on the house stuff - it's all so exciting!

  4. Oh, the packing! AAAAAAACK. We once moved three times in 15 months, and I just left the labels on the boxes and put the same stuff back in them. And now we NEVER WANT TO MOVE AGAIN. I HATE moving.

Totally agree on the toothpaste. We briefly brushed our cats' teeth, and it was like brushing their teeth with cat food. Blech.

  5. Oooh this is all too exciting! I think that the packing probably won't be as bad as the first time around and this time... you won't have to move for a really long time!
As for the toothpaste... eh... yuk. But I know you can get both chew toys and doggysnacks that combat plaque. Might be a nice alternative

  6. I'm a dental hygienist and when I brush my mom's dogs teeth with that poultry toothpaste, I want to gag too. It's pretty nasty. Try dentabones?

  7. Watch out for the new house. That's all I'm saying... new houses are one of the world's most powerful Baby Motivators.

We moved into ours on April 13, and I had my first positive test on June 22. I'm just saying.

    ;)

  8. Montana will have so much fun at the new house! We just got our puppy on Saturday and I can't wait to fence in the larger part of the yard so that she can run like crazy. The deck kind of gets in her way in the small yard =)

  9. I was just looking at doggie toothpaste yesterday, and I thought the very same thing about the poultry flavor, and the beef flavor. The dog hates mint, so I went with peanut. I've yet to see how it goes.

So excited that the house buying is going smoothly! I hope the wonderful luck continues.

  10. Oh man, I do not envy you having to repack everything. I highly recommend Amazing Moves for movers. They are quick and the price is about average - maybe less? I don't know. Everyone raves about them.

On the inspection - ask for EVERYTHING to be fixed. Even the assinine. Because even if they don't, it can be grounds for you to reduce the price just a little bit more. As a seller, it kind of sucks, but I totally understand the strategy from a buyer's point of view.

Good luck! Glad there was nothing major.

  11. SO glad everything went well with the inspection! Older houses always have some issues (the one I'm selling was built in 1942), so only having minor ones is a bonus.

I do not envy all the packing and unpacking. That's why this is my forever home.

  12. Congrats on everything going so well!

That doggie toothpaste thing makes me want to gag too. Our dog has phenomenal teeth, we've never had to brush them (they get done when she's groomed and at her vet appointments)... we're certain its because she's a major chewer, so we buy her all kinds of bones to chew on (ones from a local pet store that are actually called Tartar Busters, so they do work!). She can't really have toys because she eats them, LOL, but bones work great for her chompers and have kept her teeth really clean!

So perhaps there are some bones out there you can combine with the brushing. Take a look at your local pet store. (The Tartar Busters we get are sort of a round shape).

  13. We use baking soda toothpaste (actually, I just put a little baking soda in water to make a paste, and use that, with a toothbrush). For our dog, that is, not us. But she loves it. I think because of the salty flavor.

Because I'm with you on the poultry toothpaste: ick-o.

If you need help with the moving, we have a truck (a pickup, not a semi or anything). Just say the word.

Also, it's great how quickly things are falling into place for you--it seems like the universe is giving your decision to move here a big thumbs-up!

  14. my puppies' toothpaste is peanut-flavoured. slightly less disgusting than poultry but still smelly enough to make me want to vomit.

  15. I'm so happy for you guys! Everything is coming together so nicely. And since this house sounds perfect, you can tell yourselves it's the last time you'll move in a VERY long time.

Also, I would like to kindly request more Montana pics, please.

  16. Poultry flavoured toothpaste may not appeal to the human palate, but if you consider the vast array of things that dogs are willing to put in their mouths--included, but not limited to, garbage, used tampons, and their own feces--poultry suddenly doesn't seem so bad :)

*My* big question is... how many rooms of the new house are you going to paint purple? :)

  17. I am so happy for you. What a lovely time in your life right now. And it is clear you are thoroughly enjoying it all.

  18. Galloping dogs are the BEST. Last night, Buster galloped from one end of the house to the other to A. and I, trying to make up his mind who to tackle first. LOVE.

  19. So just for kicks, last night the husband and I were poking around the MLS in Denver and we can't believe how much house you can get there for so little! Did the market really bottom out there as of late?

I admire your dog toothbrushing; brushing the LG's teeth every day is pretty much an exercise in futility unless of course DAD is brushing her teeth, in which case she is perfectly compliant. Hmph!

  20. Congratulations on the house...the dog...everything going so well!

  21. Just the thought of poultry-flavored toothpaste makes me a bit nauseous.

  22. At least you already got rid of junk between the DC and CO move.

Good luck with everything. I love the new house, I can't wait to see what you do with it.

  23. I'm totally with you on the yard for Montana. It is so much easier to just let the dogs out to do their business. So much easier - you'll love it!

  24. Everything is happening so so fast! It will be so wonderful for you to get settled in the new house and explore the new neighborhood with Montana. Domestic bliss.

  25. Fuzzy Britches has beef flavored toothpaste. I personally think it is disgusting, but instead of letting me brush her teeth she just tries to lick the toothpaste off the brush. Crazy puppy!

Instead of using movers, why not rent a U-Haul and do it yourself? It would be a lot less expensive.

  26. How exciting! I'm so excited for you and the new potential home.

  27. I must confess, I'm totally waiting for the baby announcement.

  28. hehe. YAY for everything falling into place!!!!

  29. My mouth is literally filling with saliva at the thought of that toothpaste situation. EW.

  30. Oooh, the appraisal, that is the one thing that is still worrying me with the sale of our condo. I'm crossing my fingers that everything still continues to go well for you in your home buying adventure!
Won't it be nice to finally feel settled once you move? I'm sure Montana is going to love it, too!

  31. We could not get our dog to stop eating the toothbrush long enough to brush his teeth. Now we have an oral rinse which is not as good as brushing but better than nothing and it is far less disgusting than the toothbrush/paste situation. . . I share the information in case the tooth brushing grows too gross for you to bear!

  32. That house is 45 years old? I never would have guessed it.

And chicken toothpaste does sound pretty nasty, but I guess dogs would probably say the same thing about mint, huh?
