I don't like the rain.

I'm back from my business trip. Which, by the way, was to Atlanta. Sorry I forgot to mention that little detail in my last post. The trip was fantastic. We had a really great, productive meeting, and I felt totally on the ball. I had answers to all the questions and we were able to really collaborate and brainstorm. The meeting ran completely on schedule and I got a lot of really useful feedback to start doing Round 2 of this website. And I got the sense that the clients really liked me.

Also, on Wednesday night I totally watched Moment of Truth, because I knew Torsten would never agree to watch it so it was my only opportunity to see it. And all these bloggy people kept telling me that even though it looked like a terrible show, I had to watch it, just once.

So, I watched it. Just once. And never again. Honestly, I just didn't like it. Not because it gave me that weird squirmy feeling that shows like that can give. I didn't even like it as a guilty pleasure. I just thought it was dull. First of all, the secrets just aren't that interesting. Okay, the guy has a gambling problem and hit on his girlfriend's friend once right after they started dating. Fine, the beauty queen thinks she's prettier than her sister (which is true). Juicy.

The other thing that I can't deal with is how incredibly slowly the show moves. It is just so dragged out. It's not just those ridiculous long pauses while you wait to hear if the answer is true or false. It's the whole rigmarole about asking whether the person really wants to continue and risk facing more and more questions. On and on and on just to learn a bunch of boring secrets about random people.

And this is what I really don't get. The people act all shocked and horrified whenever they hear a question. And when they're deciding if they're going to keep going they act all anxious, like they're afraid of what questions they're going to be asked.

But the whole premise of the show is that they took the polygraph test ahead of time. So they KNOW what the questions are going to be. I mean, yeah, there were 50 questions on the polygraph and only 21 of them will be asked on the show, but still, they know what the possibilities are. They therefore have fair warning if there's a horrible question that they won't want to answer on national television. And if there were such a question, they can pretty much bet that it will be asked on the show. It's not like the producers are going to let slide the opportunity to, for example, force a guy to tell his wife he cheated on her.

So, the show pretty much sucked. And I don't see the appeal. Can someone please explain it to me?

Anyway, this feels like a very short week, mostly because of the business trip. It's already Friday and the Super Bowl is on Sunday. I like watching football but I'm not really supporting either side. What I'm looking forward to is a good game, great commercials, and the little Super Bowl gathering that we're having with a few friends. That will be the best part.

  1. That show is going to ruin lives. And for what $250,000? That's crap. Pure crap. No amount of money is worth anyone knowing my biggest secrets.

  2. I totally agree, I thought it was BORING and AWKWARD, two of my least favorite qualities in supposed "entertainment".

  3. hee! rigamarole! excellent word.

also: would you like help picking a side to support in the superbowl? because i can write you a long essay with multiple salient points about why you should root for the giants.

glad your meeting went well! that's awesome!

    ps GO GIANTS!

  5. I watched it also. I thought it was a little creepy and EXCRUCIATINGLY slow. THEN, I found out about the fact that they know the pool of questions. So I just turned it off, because that's just stupid and boring. If they were hooked up to the polygraph machine WHILE on the show answering the questions, AND the questions were complete surprises, AND I wanted to watch a train wreck, well THEN the show might be interesting.

Anyway, glad your business trip went so well.

  6. if i had had my coffee i would say something about how pathetically this show represents american cultural intelligence. but mostly it makes me sad the strike wont just end so i can watch the office. damn it.

  7. I haven't watched the show for exactly the same reason - why do I want to know a bunch of boring secrets about random people? Total snoozer.

    Have a great weekend! ~LA

  8. Today at school we're having a "Souper Bowl" party where everyone brings chili and soups and fun foods. It's going to be more fun than actually watching the game.

    But seriously: go New England!

  9. i totally agree jess, the show dragged on for what seemed like foreeeeeever. i watched the premiere, but never again.

  10. yes that show is a waste of time and i actually had a bad dream about one dude the night i watched it last week. terrible! you couldnt pay me to do that!

  11. I've never even heard of that show. I guess I'm better off for NOT knowing about it. :)

I agree that socializing is the best part of the Super Bowl, not the game. Our plans kind of fell through, so we will be socializing with just each other for the game...That's alright, too. :)

  12. My thoughts EXACTLY. We'll never watch it again. And I just thought the whole premise of the show was mean, they try to ruin a person's life while we watch. But you are right, they don't even do a good job at it.

The pauses waiting for True and False were excessive. It made me hate the show.

It sucked. It sucked. It sucks.

  13. I'm glad your trip went so well. I travel all the time and really struggle with eating well and exercising on the road. I know you were not gone that long...but what worked for you?

  14. I haven't seen the show but your post just reinforces the fact that I have no desire to.

And also, I think you should root for the Giants. ;)

  15. I've never seen the show, but it doesn't really draw me in either.

Glad you had a nice trip! Have a fabulous weekend!

  16. The superbowl to me, is all about the Justin Timberlake commercial. haha

  17. I watched once too and its time of my life I wish I could get back.

  18. I couldn't deal with the show either... if it moved faster..maybe-- but as is? it's boring as crap.

    ReplyDelete
  19. dude, that's exactly why I couldn't get into it. I was like, "how on earth does the dude know EXACTLY which questions to ask you - a TOTAL stranger - to get you to make an ass of yourself?"

well, there ya have it, they get screened before-hand.

  20. I'm glad your meeting went well. I'm praying that the writers strike ends NOW so the stupid reality crap taking up my precious TV time goes away.

  21. Big Fat Ditto to everything you said about that show. The elongated pauses infuriate.

  22. 10 points for using the word "rigamarole" in context.

    xox

  23. I am so tired of all the reality t.v. drivel that has taken the place of shows that require actual writers. Meh.

  24. Yes, yes, I HATED that show. I made it through about 15 minutes or so the 1st week. More than enough for me.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I've only watched it once and it gave me the squirmy feeling too. It felt like... a weird invasion on strangers lives.

I'd rather watch reruns of The Office.

  26. I haven't seen the show. I don't like the premise because it sets the participant up to destroy his/her reputation and relationships with other people. I'm glad to know that it's not a good show on top of that.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I haven't seen the show. But a polygraph, meaty questions, real life people would make a juicy show...or so I'd imagine.

Superbowl yes, ah I'm so not a sports person.

I'm glad your meeting went well. Lucky you, the week to me seemed sooo streeeeetched out, I'm glad it's Friday. Finally.

    Have a great weekend!

  28. Yeaaa I definitely cannot watch that show and I dont care about teh Super Bowl, I care about the nachos and the beer that accompany a super bowl!!

  29. I want to FORCE Jim to watch this show, just to make him squirm. He loathes any sort of TV/movie featuring excessive awkwardness or faux suspense, and it sounds like this show is CHOCK FULL. Or is it choc?

  30. I just can't fathom going on a gameshow and having it possibly ruin my life or hurting other people. It just doesn't seem worth it to me.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have absolutely no idea what that show is... but I'm intrigued!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Never seen it, but I was intrigued. Now, not so much.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh god, that show is fricking terrible. Why SO SLOW? WHY? It drives me batshit crazy.

    Have a good weekend Jess!

  34. I have a morbid curiosity to see that show at least once. I hate the drawn out pauses like you do tho. Have you seen that "Lyrics" show? SO GOOD. There was a little 11 yr old on last night and while they gave him easy songs, he was still SO entertaining. He's totally the next Wayne Brady. He danced, sang, and was hilarious and personable.

  35. That show is totally boring. There should be some bigger consequences. Like if you get caught lying you lose a finger.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ugh I HATED that show. I have no patience so I couldn't sit there during all of those annoying pauses!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I saw commercials for the show, and then yelled a lot about the entire premise, and how stupid it looked, and did some solid railing about how tv really is the worst thing, ever, even though I miss my 30 Rock.

    UGH.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wait. They KNOW the questions in advance?? What the hell? What fun is that? I mean, this show sounded like a terrible idea to begin with, but then they just went and made a terrible idea just plain stupid.

Yeah, I won't be watching it either.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Urg, I saw the previews for that and didn't even know what it was called until you put it on here, but URG. I never wanted to watch it - I don't see the appeal, and it sickens me what some people will do to their lives JUST to be on television.

Good to know it sucks as much as I thought.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't think that I could manage to watch that show, I really don't. Forcing people to admit their unflattering, mean thoughts? It's just not entertaining to me.

  42. I wasn't a fan of that show at all. I agree, it moves way way to slow and it is just weird.

Congrats on a good meeting, most of the ones I have to attend are very very pointless.

    ReplyDelete
  43. i maintain it's good tv just because it's fun to watch people squirm, especially when the reactions from the crowds are factored in... but that's just me.

    ReplyDelete
  44. We don't get that show. It sounds truly dreadful. I imagine people watch it for the same reason they slow down to look at a car accident.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I HATE all those stupid game shows. Half of Deal or No Deal (which has the worst premise for a show, ever, and it freaks me out that people will watch an hour of the excitement of the laws of probability) is damn pauses.

I am also tempted to do a polygraph rant. Because those things aren't even close to 100% accurate... hence why polygraph evidence isn't admissable in most courts anymore.

  46. Enjoy your Super Bowl Party! Oh, and by the way, you can root for the Pats--you wouldn't want to see your friend sad, no? :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I can't explain that show.

I hate it. It's like a soap opera without any acting ability.

    the writers strike MUST END!!

  48. I loved your you dissected the show. Never watched it myself but only because it's not on in SA.

  49. That show is lame - I watched it once and said never again as well - I am glad your business trip was great :)
