The ultimate PDA

I know it's Tuesday, but I'm going to skip the Retrospective for this week, unless yesterday can be considered a memory. Which you could definitely argue for, but I'm not going to start meta-blogging about this. We'll be returning to our regularly scheduled programming next Tuesday.

Anyway, yesterday was the day of the Dallas Mavericks vs. Washington Wizards game for which I gave Torsten tickets for his birthday back in November. The Mavs are Torsten's favourite basketball team, and he swears it's not because their star, Dirk Nowitzki, is German. Originally I wanted to take him to Dallas for a game as his birthday present, but then I realized that after the cost of the trip, we'd only be able to afford the nosebleed seats, so I opted to wait until the team came to DC and then get genuinely good seats.

And damn, our seats WERE good. They were behind the basket, five rows away from the court, and the view was just fantastic. You could see everything as the players were getting physical under the basket. It was just RIGHT THERE. I didn't realize how much physical contact was actually allowed in basketball without a foul being called--but those guys are all over each other. Defenders always have their hands on the guy they're defending, and there's lots of pushing and tangling that goes on all the time. Also, watching a 7-foot guy fly through the air to grab a rebound is pretty spectacular.

It kind of sucks to be rooting against the home team, though. The crowd has all this energy and instead of getting swept up in it, you get resentful and also feel compelled to clap louder when your team does something good. As a result, my hands were stinging by the time the game ended--and to no avail, as the Mavs (or as Torsten now calls them, "stupid fucking loser idiots") lost the game.

However, the highlight of the game: we were on the Kiss Cam! We were just sitting there, watching the Jumbotron and seeing other people kiss, and then suddenly there we were on the screen! It was actually a little bit weird, kissing and knowing we were on TV in front of thousands of fans, and not being able to see what they were seeing or know if we looked totally idiotic. However, I could hear the crowd cheering and saying "Aww" while we were kissing, so I can only assume that we didn't look too ridiculous.

Am I the only one who gets excessively excited about such things? I thought being on the Kiss Cam was awesome. And also, I was extremely pleased that the cameraman picked us out of the crowd as a kiss-worthy couple. I think that must say something about our body language. Right?

  1. New here, but I just have to say the Kiss Cam is hilarious. They have one at Shea Stadium and every single time they manage to put the camera on a couple who are in fact, not a couple. And they awkwardly shake their heads at the camera like 'Why are you doing this to me?' or 'That's my mom!' Good times.

  2. Haha, the Kiss Cam! That would be the highlight of the game for me! Awesome.

  3. I think the Kiss Cam cameramen are trained to spot genuinely in love couples. :)That's awesome!

  4. Thinking about sports sort of just makes me tired. Glad you had a great time, though!

  5. The kiss cam is awesome!! I think it's lucky too, like four leaf clovers or something (or at least it is in MY mind). And good call on the Mavs, they're one of my favorites too.

  6. That's so awesome, although I probably would've been terrified! When D and I had season tickets in the lower level for the Hurricanes I always feared being on the kiss cam...well, really the jumbotron in general.

  7. Being on the Kiss Cam is definitely a good sign and would have been the highlight of attending a sports event for me!

  8. How fun! Yay for the Kiss Cam! At least there was that highlight for Torsten since his team lost. I think basketball is one of the most exciting games to watch live - especially when you're that close to the court!!

  9. Definitely, I'd say that means you two were exuding a True Love Aura that could be felt ACROSS A STADIUM!

  10. The Kiss Cam is AWESOME! And CUTE! They should give you a still-frame of the shot or something to keep as a souvenier.

  11. That's so cute! My dh would have been so embarrassed by that. :)

  12. YOU WERE ON KISS CAM?!?! That is awesome. I live in mortal fear of the kiss cam whenever we go to a sporting event, but I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.

  14. Oh, that's awesome! It's too bad you couldn't get an instant replay.

  15. Damn! I've ALWAYS wanted to be on the kiss cam! Everytime we go to a sporting event I get all excited hoping they will pick Eric and I!

And Eric is an avid Mavericks fan too, he feels Torsten's pain!

  16. I LOVE that you guys were chosen for the Kiss Cam! That is absolutely adorable. And, trust me - I work in TV, cameramen know body language better than anyone.

  21. I can't decide if the idea of a kiss cam terrifies me or strangely intrigues me. Technically speaking, this is the girl who when her boyfriend at the time tried to kiss her in front of her friends on her birthday, she turned bright red, grabbed her two best friends and ran away to the bathroom. I may not be the best at PDA...

  24. I'd take the Kiss Cam selection as a compliment to my relationship for sure. Though I'm always terrified of being on that thing. Too high pressure!

  27. That's awesome! The kiss cam is great, I've yet to be spotted but I would be nervous too, kissing infront of all those people, I can only imagine what my face looks like on the big screen.

  28. haha, that's awesome! i'm weird about stuff like that - i'm ALL ABOUT pda generally, but i get all weirded out if they put me up on a big screen. but i LOVE to watch other people get put up there (genuinely, i mean! not like haha-sucker) so i'm not really sure what this says about me.

  31. Awwwwww! how cute is that?!

I'm so not a sports watcher but I remember going to a basketball game and being very impressed with the speed and intensity of the game! What a great gift!

  32. I can't say I'd ever want to be on the kiss cam, but ... I do have a story about cheering for the other team. A few years ago, my alumni club went to see the Bulls play the Bobcats because two of our guys were playing for the Bobcats. So, not only were we NOT cheering for the home team, we weren't even cheering for the away team, either. We were cheering for Ray-ray (Raymond Felton) and S-Bomb (Sean May) and everyone under the sun thought the 30 or so people in my section were looney.

  36. I have never heard of kiss cam. We definitely must not have that here. Never mind about that, I need to go away and think very hard to work out what PDA stands for. I always thought it was a little organiser thingummy.

  37. I've always wanted ot make it to the kiss cam, but I never have anyone to kiss!!!! BOO.

  38. do they really have people who look to see who must be in love? what if you and a stranger got on it? or a friend? or a first date with a guy you really don't like? this frightens me very much.

    but yay for you! :P

  39. The game sounds like so much fun. I love basketball but haven't ever been to a professional game. I do a lot of watching from my couch and it probably just isn't the same.

I bet you and Torsten looked adorable on the Kiss Cam.

    ReplyDelete
  40. i can't believe you were on the kiss cam!! that's awesome that you two got aw's from the crowd =). and you are so sweet for getting those tickets for your boyfriend - those seats sound amazing.

my friends and i like to pull out the "kiss cam" when we're out sometimes and feel some need for additional hilarity, usually pointing our camera at two of our guys and yelling: KISS CAM.

have you seen this link? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwh2IAa4M5o tell me what you think after you see it!

  41. Your guy kisses you in public? Lucky!

  42. Awwwww- that so cute!

I went to a soccer game with my hubby once, it was cold, people were drunk and loud and... I brought a book.

I'm a geek... and no kiss cam :(

  43. Hehe! "Stupid fucking loser idiots" We've TOTALLY been there. B and I flew all the way to Tennessee (football), only to see our team get beat. Not only beat, but BAAAD. There was only ONE, I'll repeat, ONE (!) first down in the entire first half. It was the single most humiliating experience. And did you know Tennessee fans are kind of mean to away team fans. We were literally up in the nose-bleed section, because that's all they'll give to away team fans. It was terrible. So, yeah. Feel your pain!

  44. I never get put on the Kiss Cam! I am so jealous!

  45. AWWW yay for kiss cam! Just like in how to lose a guy in 10 days :-)

  46. I thought they made sure you saw you were on the Kiss Cam first before they cheered for you to kiss. It's a super ambush... but sweet all the same!
