World Cup!

So! The World Cup starts today. How many of you care? No, seriously. How many?

I cared a little bit, and then I married a German guy, and he cares a lot, and actually now so do I. It's an even trade; he never cared about baseball until he met me.

Obviously we are rooting for Germany. It would be nice to see the US do well too, but what are the odds of that happening? I'm guessing slim to none, despite what the media claims. It seems like every four years we read all about how this is really going to be the US's year, and then they don't even get out of group play.

Oh and I'd also like France to do well. Though nobody there expects that to happen. When I was in France a major department store was running an ad for an expensive TV saying that they would give purchasers' money back in full if France won the World Cup, and all my French friends were snorting and saying that was a safe bet for the store since there isn't a chance in hell that France will win. But still, it would be nice.

And I'd like Senegal to do well, except they aren't in it this time. Oh well.

So: gooooooo Germany! We will definitely be at a bar watching them play Australia this weekend.

What about you? Do you care about the World Cup? Will you be watching? Who will you be rooting for?

  1. And our paths seem to cross again. Can't say I was a big futbol fan before meeting Sweets. But, he's a huge fan. Been to a number of World Cup games over the years. He (and therefore I) will definitely be watching the games closely this weekend.

  2. I LOVE the World Cup! It's a fun time to go out places to watch games, too. Fun crowd and you meet lots of people from other countries/cultures that you normally wouldn't.

But yeah, my ex used to play soccer in Europe and that's how I got into it. COMMON THEME. Heh.

  3. I don't really care about the World Cup, but I totally understand learning to care because of significant others. I started watching baseball in order to have time and conversation with my husband years ago. Now, with him AND a baseball-obsessed 2-year-old, I can talk strategy and know the names of players and can even recognize them. It's unnatural.

  4. I LOVE the World Cup. Like Tess said, it's so cool to get a different and more global perspective on things by watching a sport where we're a minor player, not a dominant force. One of the coolest experiences of my life was being in France when they won in 1998, and pouring out into the street to celebrate with the rest of the country. So great.

Start of World Cup + Blackhawks victory parade and rally makes today a Very Good Sports Day.

  5. I'm a terrible sports fan...I ask too many questions, don't understand any of it, and generally am not enthusiastic. Case in point: the Blackhawks just won and the only reason I care is because there's a celebration this morning that's making downtown traffic a nightmare. So have fun watching and I'll try to stay out of everyone's way!

  6. We'll be watching the game too.. but rooting for the other side unfortunately! (Though I hate to say it, but football (SOCCER) is not really our best sport, hehe.) :)

It's fun living in Europe while World Cup fever hits. They really LOVE it over here, it's completely insane. And nice to be watching it in a good time zone this time.

  7. Well for that particular game-goooo Australia! It really amazes me there is even a team here when so few people play soccer here.

Of course I'd like my home country of NZ to win it some time in the future.

  8. I know absolutely nothing about the World Cup or really even soccer. I've watched my nephews play a few times, and that's about it.

However, this year Sports Illustrated has been covering it like CRAZY so I've been reading about it and I'm actually thinking it's pretty cool! It's somewhat of a mini-Olympics, it seems (although probably there are some who would argue that it's BIGGER than the Olympics).

    I'll probably watch a bit.

  11. Oh yeah, husband has always been way into soccer, playing it, coaching it, watching it. He even tried to talk me into going to Germany four years ago for the World Cup!
So he'll be in a bar with a bunch of his rabid US friend/fans.

  15. One of the British electronics companies is promising the same thing - that people get their money back if England win. I'm not overly in to the football but my husband has organised an online teams table for lots of our friends so I'm keeping up with it in passing.

  16. I have a few teams that I will be rooting for to win, but I probably won't watch the games. Soccer is just not my thing.

  17. As a German I care about the World Cup of course! I watched the game against Australia at home and likely will be watching Friday's against Serbia at home as well but I do have plans to watch the one against Ghana at a public viewing (I know it means something else in English, that's Denglish for when football matches are shown on huge screens in public which happens everywhere for the world cup) site, as it's my birthday and I'll make it part of my birthday party.
