Boots!

I have tomorrow off of work, and I am so excited about it. I don't have any earth-shattering plans, but I am really looking forward to the day.

We're having some lovely people over for dinner, so after I get up (which will hopefully be luxuriously late), I will head over to Whole Foods to pick up everything we need to prepare the meal. And at some point I will head to the gym to swim for an hour (or, if I happen to wake up early, I'll go to water aerobics class). There will hopefully be some relaxing on the couch. And possibly a trip to the dog park.

But what I am most looking forward to is SHOPPING. I don't shop much, especially these days when we are working on paying off my surgery. But I've decided to make one purchase that I really missed last winter: soft, warm winter boots. I have real, hardcore snow boots (with purple trim!). They're great. We bought them when we found out we were moving to Denver for real. They are tough, and waterproof, and warm, and they have great traction. But they are also stiff and awkward and not really comfortable for long periods of time. They're designed for really walking IN snow, like when you have to take the dog for a walk or whatever.

So yeah, I have that. But what I WANT is cozy warm fluffy boots. Not ones that do well in the snow, not necessarily even ones that are practical and reasonable. No, what I want is the winter equivalent to summer's flip flops. Comfortable, easy, slip on right away when you're headed out the door, not appropriate for brutal weather.

Basically, what I want is Uggs. Though they are expensive, and also not the most attractive thing I've ever seen. So I'm going to the mall to try some on. And I'm also going to try on Emu boots, because those are similar but more affordable. Although also possibly even less attractive.

So, here are my options. I'm considering three colors of Ugg: sand, eggplant, and gray.

I like the sand the best, I think. They're the most versatile and the least offensive. But I'm concerned that they'll show dirt too easily. But I've also heard that if you apply the weatherproofing and dirt-resistant spray stuff, they don't get that dirty, and they can be cleaned. Thoughts on this? Does anyone have experience with this?

Then there's the eggplant. Yes, this season Uggs are available in a deep purple. Which is awesome, but do I really want purple boots? Boots that I would wear with everything? Wouldn't that be a tad over the top? I mean, it just seems excessive. But on the other hand: PURPLE.

Gray is sort of my backup plan, if I decide that the sand will show dirt and the purple is too much. But I don't really LIKE the gray. I just don't want to get the chocolate (which I also like), because I wear too much black. And I don't like the black ones either. Gray is the least offensive of the remaining colors, basically. But does that reasoning really make sense for such expensive boots?

Then there's the Emu option. But a) I don't really like any of the colors (they don't have a sand or eggplant equivalent--their beige is hideous--so I'd have to go with the gray), and b) they really are ugly, in my humble opinion. Still, is it worth it for the cost savings? The Uggs cost almost twice as much as the Emus.

Sooooo... what do I do? Uggs or Emus? What color?

  1. I say Uggs in the sand color or purple. Comfort is everything.

  2. I think the Emu looks just like the Uggs!

I would go with whatever feels the best, but that's because in MN I'd be wearing them for 7 months.

  3. I don't think the Emus are that bad, compared to the Uggs. If they are just as comfortable, I'd get those in gray.

  4. I had a friend with gray Uggs (though the shade of gray was the same as the Emu gray) and though I'm not an Uggs girl, I thought those were a much better option than the sand color which everyone has. It was something a little different, but still matched with most things.

  5. I really want Uggs too, although, they are SO!UGLY! I think I would do black though.

  6. I actually kinda like the Emu boots better. I had knockoff uggs in a sand colour and they got extremely dirty, even after spraying, so I'd definitely go with gray or purple.

  7. I actually like the dark grey best. The other colours kind of look like slippers.

  8. Uggs, gray. My sister has a beige pair and a yellow pair and they do show messes. Not as terribly as you'd think, but they do require attention & time to keep consistently clean.

  9. I think the Emus are actually a little less ugly, though I think they're still ugly. I like the gray. Match everything.

  10. I really want a pair of Uggs! I put them on my Christmas list last year and I got a version from Lands End, but they didn't hold up well at all, which was disapointing. I think I will just buy them myself...

If I were you, I'd get the eggplant! It looks like they are dark enough that they will still go with most things and they won't look so obviously purple!

  11. Uggs are totally worth it- I've had mine since my junior year of high school (8 years)and they're still warm and comfortable. Since you'll be wearing them in more snow I would say yours probably woudn't last quite that long, but still a great pair of boots either way. I like the chestnut and as a note the sand do get pretty dirty.

  12. I'e wanted a pair of Uggs for the past few years, but I've never caved. I actually got some money from my grandpa last Christmas solely for the purpose of buying these shoes... but I never did it. I think I spent the money on clothes. Although I've heard the Uggs are super comfy, I just haven't splurged yet. For you, I say for Emu in gray. They are cheaper and won't get as dirty. But if you like the Uggs better I vote for the sand. They are my fav!

  13. i cannot answer this question on reasons of principle. i cannot support the uggs movement. i'm sorry. :-)

  14. I've debated getting a pair of Uggs but all the college girls here in Boston wear them, so that killed my love for them.

I understand wanting something soft and comfy, though. Have you considered getting a pair of low cut Hunter boots with the fuzzy sock inserts? I have the knee-high Hunters with fleece socks and I'm very happy with them. Just a suggestion!

  15. I have a pair in deep brown. They are comfortable. I've found that the dark brown shows winter dirt/dust a TON and my pair look far worse than my sister's pair of tan ones. I do want to emphasize that you really cannot wear them in any type of inclement weather whatsoever. They are super slippery and not waterproofed so your feet will get wet if you walk in snow. So, in short, go with a lighter color, but don't expect to wear them unless it's a nice day out. Have you looked at the La Canadienne boots? They're cute, comfy and weather friendly.

  16. I'm so not a fan of Uggs. So clunky. I have a pair of boots by Sofft (or Soft) not sure if it's a funky spelling that are awesome for what you are talking about -- and I live in Michigan, so I understand winters.

  17. I actually think the Emu ones are slightly cuter.

  18. I love love love my Uggs. Love 'em. I have a waterproof pair (the now-defunct Bandons), and am craving the non-waterproof kind for the same reasons you are. But oh, all of them. SO COMFORTABLE. Seriously. And worth every penny.

  19. I don't care what anyone says, Uggs are essential here. Nothing is better for slipping on after skiing, to walk the dog, run to the store....I love mine to pieces! I have the low ones, in the medium tan color.

We are looking forward to tomorrow :)

  20. I'm with Alice.

Of course that's really easy for me to say since I live in California, which means that my worn-out Reef flip flops are always weather-appropriate.

BUT the Emus look like they're not quite as flat, which would be much more comfortable for me.

  21. I don't like Uggs, but my vote would be the Emus.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have Emus, and they aren't bad at all, especially when I get salt stains on them, I don't feel bad about it because they weren't super expensive at all. And they are still warm. I think if you want purple ones and are willing to splurge go with the Uggs. I bought the Emus I have at the time because they were in pink :)

  23. I think the Emu looks exactly like the Uggs, so unless the sand or eggplant color is worth it to you, I would go w/ the Emus. Plus, and I know you disagree, but I actually prefer the grey color in both the Emu and the Ugg and I can see it being a lot more versatile no matter your outfit. Now just please don't become one of those people who pair their Uggs with a short skirt, because then? I would have to stop reading. :)

  24. I LOVE the purple!!! Those are beautiful! But I would go with the gray. I think gray is even more versatile than sand.

  25. I think Uggs are hideous, but people swear they're comfy and warm. Well, that's all that counts in Denver, right?

I'd go for the purple, myself, just because, well, they're purple.

If you're not sure about purple, then go for grey.

  26. Im definitely not into uggs and their designs but I heard they're so comfortable. Nobody wears it here, but that's because it's too hot to wear fur boots :)

  27. Hello, you might also want to check Bearpaw, they look exactly like Uggs, but aren't as expensive. Good luck.

PS: I'd go with gray out of those 3.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Definitely Uggs. :) If you like the purple, get the purple. I think the sand will get too dirty. I have chestnut in the regular height, and brown in the tall. I think I want grey or black! You should check out CozyBoots, they have a lot of deals on Uggs.

  29. I have these rather than Uggs (I actually found them to be more comfortable/softer when I tried both).

    http://www.bearpawshoes.com/

I 100% recommend this type of boot. I love them A LOT and they are so easy to wear anywhere. No matter which brand you get, I just wanted to say: go for it!

  30. I wear my Uggs and fake Uggs TO DEATH in the winter, and I live in Southern California where's it's never really gets cold enough to justify them. Personally, I like the gray option, but that's me. I have fake Uggs in sand and find that I wear them least often. I have Uggs in chocolate and fakes in black and wear them equally. I think I would wear the gray ones all the time because they match so much, but they're different from what everyone else has.

  31. There's got to be a better alternative to Uggs/Emus! Something that doesn't look like everyone has mad cankles. I vote for the shorter bootie idea.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I got my Uggs last year from 6pm.com. They were at least a season behind in style but what did I care? They were a lot cheaper than the current ones in the store. I thought they ugly before I bought them, but I LOVE them. LOVE LOVE LOVE. They are warm and toasty and sort of feel like wearing your slippers.

  33. When I moved to Chicago I bought fake Uggs and they lasted about five minutes. I bought real Uggs and they are worth. every. penny. I actually have the super comfy short brown ones made popular by sorority girls across the nation and hardcore goretex snowproof ones that are truly amazing. The soft suede ones are life the most comfortable shoes you will ever wear. They are hideous but truly worth it. Also, their customer service is amazing. I had my heavy duty snow shoe pair for many months before an inside seam came loose and they replaced them without a receipt, no questions asked, and mailed them to my Chicago address even though I returned them in Texas. Most things I will skimp or by generic but these are worth every cent. The light ones will absolutely show dirt. I have the waterproof/stainproof stuff and it doesn't really work. If you're going to wear yours a ton, get whatever is most practical. Nothing too dark because salt residues show up as white stains.

  34. Oh dear I am a HUGE Uggs fan. I have two pairs and they are perfect for Chicago winters (non snow.) I LOVE THEM. I say go for purple, its such a nice shock of color in the snow.

  35. Just when I think Uggs have gone away for good, I realize they are very much still with us. Obviously the purple ones are the ones for you, but I'm having a really hard time looking at those pictures at all, given that it's currently 84 degrees in my living room. I think it's time to hit the sandal clearance section! :-)

  36. As I sit here in hell, eh Texas, all I could think of was "HOT, HOT, HOT" and felt a flash coming on... Don't think I have an opinion since I could probably only wear them once every two-three years...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well, I vote for the purple uggs... they are pretty :) And look like they will keep your feet nice and toasty!
The Emu's are really just ehm... uggly

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like the eggplant best, but I think they'd get really dirty, so I'd choose gray.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have a particular hatred of Uggs. Mostly because you see pictures of dumb girls in LA wearing them in 80 degree weather with mini skirts. I'm sorry, but Uggs and Emus are UGLY. They look the same and it's not a flattering look in any way, shape or form.

Having said that, I bought a pair of chocolate Emus last winter. They're exactly what you described - warm and comfy and perfect for cold days where you want to throw on shoes quickly as you're running out the door.

  40. the light purple uggs mom got me were weatherproofed and all that and they are dirty beyond repair, fyi...
