WHO'S a poor puppy?

OK, she's not a puppy (although we keep calling her that), but Montana is definitely a poor doggie.

I wasn't going to post about her again because three days in a row seems like a bit much to talk about my dog (although really I could talk about her forever because OMG I LOVE HER and everything she does is obviously fascinating). But then she had a little incident yesterday evening.

When we finished work we took her to the dog park for the second day in a row. She was doing really well and we were very impressed. She was running around, chasing dogs and letting them chase her and generally interacting and playing very well. Then she started coming up to Torsten and me and not leaving, and then I looked down and saw a big smudge on her side.

I looked closer and it wasn't a smudge, it was blood. It was hard to see through her fur, but when we pulled it apart we could see that it was a pretty deep gash. We still don't know how it happened. We were watching her the entire time, and we didn't see any incidents at all. The vet thinks maybe she was running and gashed herself on a stick caught on a fence.

Of course, it was after business hours so we couldn't take her to her regular vet (if having her first appointment set for three days from now counts as "regular"). Luckily, in researching vets a few days ago, I had found a highly recommended emergency clinic (though I hadn't expected to need to go there quite so SOON), so after a call to a friend to get her to look up the clinic details I'd emailed to myself (because of course I hadn't brought my BlackBerry with me), we went there.

The whole thing ended up costing $200, but actually, the emergency vet was great. They saw her almost right away, they treated her well, and they were very skilled. They shaved a square patch around the laceration, flushed out the wound, and gave her several staples to hold it closed. She was so well-behaved that she didn't even have to be sedated during the process, which is apparently very unusual. They also gave her a shot of antibiotics and gave us seven days' worth of the medication to follow up with.

Then she started licking her wound, and they said that to keep her from doing that, or chewing on it, we could either put a t-shirt on her or put one of those big plastic cones around her neck.

Guess which option we chose?

  1. Aw, poor Montana (and puppy is totally Ok - even when she's 12!). I'd say for an emergency vet and getting antibiotics and staples, etc., you actually got out of there for a somewhat reasonable price. The emergency vets near us charge $100+ just to see them, then were going to charge us another $150 or soemthing crazy like that for xrays. Our normal vet only cost $75.

Also, I have a list of emergency vets posted on our fridge with phone number, address and directions. It's like they are my kids.

    Glad she's ok - here's to a speedy recovery!

  4. Awww! Even though I am sad that she got hurt, she looks SO CUTE in the t-shirt!

  6. Awww... poor thing!! Animals get into the weirdest situations, even when you're watching them!

And she looks really cute with a t-shirt on!!

  7. Poor baby! Adorableness IS off the charts with that t shirt mind you.

  8. Ooh, poor puppy! I'm glad she's OK.

Finding a good emergency vet is crucial. We needed one less than 3 days after getting Shorty and it's so much easier having one ready than to frantically try to find one as your dog is sick or hurt.

That t-shirt is so cute! It doesn't even look like she minds it!

  11. She's soooo cute!! The T-Shirt is such a better option, good call!

    You're already a wonderful puppy mama = )

  14. Poor Montana! We had a similar incident not too long after getting SoMi. It involved a gash she got after going to doggie daycare. Isn't this good practice for kids, though? Things happen. And while we can't prevent everything, we can be ready, remain calm and deal with issues as they arise! Sounds like you and Torsten were stars!

  15. Oh, poor thing! We opt for the t-shirt whenever possible too. If she figures out how to get around it, you can use a hair tie to gather up the hem of the shirt and tie it tighter around her (as if it were 1983). I hope she feels better soon!

  16. Aw. The T-shirt looks great, though. :)

Also, nothing happened in our game except I'm having trouble coming up with a word that scores anything decent. Or doesn't give you immediate access to the 3W square. Because frankly, the combo of you and the 3W square strikes fear into my heart. :)

  17. one of the reasons i love my vet is because they're 24 hour. i mean, after "normal" hours you get CHARGED emergency prices, but still! i know where it is and i know i trust them, so it's WELL WORTH IT.

poor montana!! hope she gets better quickly.

  18. oh sad! well at least she got some good attention from the vet to take care of it. :)

and we still call our dog Puppy and he's 4. i'm pretty sure he thinks it's one of his names. haha

  19. Oh no! Poor thing. It's hard to say whether I would have picked the t-shirt or the cone. Both are sort of equally hilarious. I guess the t-shirt IS slightly more dignified, though.

  22. OH, poor puppy!! Yeah, somehow dogs do things that are invisible to the naked eye. I don't know how they do it, but it's just part of the joy of being a dog-owner. :) Poor thing, hope she's feeling ok.

  23. Ahhh... the joys of motherhood...

  24. Awww. You sound like you handled it well - especially for a new dog mom! Hope she gets better soon. :)

  25. We weren't given the t-shirt choice because our pup's wound was on her tail, but I just wrote about the antics involved with the collar. Be glad you didn't choose it - the t-shirt is MUCH cuter. I hope she's feeling better soon.

  26. Montana getting hurt is not good or funny, but that picture was the PERFECT way to start the day. Glad she's OK.

  27. OMG, that t-shirt is hilarious. Poor doggie. Glad you were able to scout a good after-hours care place in a hurry.

  28. Oh, poor doggy! But the bright side is NOW YOU KNOW HOW CUTE SHE LOOKS IN A T-SHIRT!! I think she's going to need her own wardrobe, yes?

  29. Poor Montana! She's lucky she has such a good dog-mom and -dad though.

  30. That is the cutest thing ever, although the circumstances are most definitely crappy. I hope she's better soon!

  31. Oh, poor baby! I am so glad she is feeling ok. And the T-shirt is totally awesome!

  32. Good call on the t-shirt. Poor puppy.

  33. I love that Montana didn't have to have a cone--it always seems like such an insult to injury. I feel crummy AND I have to look like a huge dork.

And yes, $200 for an emergency vet care is practically free. The one we used to go to charged $250 just to say Hi, I think my dog might need help.

  34. AWH! That picture of her in her shirt is so cute. I'm sorry she had to get hurt to get that way, but I'm glad she's okay!

  35. That t-shirt option is absolutely brilliant, and too cute! The boy had to wear a cone when he was about a year old after he got a cut on his leg, and again last summer when he developed a stubborn hot spot from a skin allergy. I think he hates the cone slightly more than I hate trying to wrestle him into it. :(

I hope Montana's ouchie gets better soon and she is back enjoying the dog park in no time!

  36. First: This exact same thing happened to Fonz about six weeks ago. Like, EXACT same thing. Weird.
Second: No one suggested the t shirt thing to us, and they didn't offer a cone either, so he wound up licking it like crazy and nearly getting it infected.
Third: We paid almost five hundred dollars.

  37. Oh the poor thing!! On the plus side, she looks freaking adorable in a t-shirt.

  38. Poor baby! I would have gone with the shirt too =)

  39. awww poor pup! I hope she is ok and makes a speedy recovery! Although you guys are pretty lucky that it was only $200 at an emergancy vet! Last time I had to go I couldn't believe how expensive it was!

  40. She is too cute for words in that shirt.

  41. Awww poor Montana!!! Hopefully she gets better soon!

  42. Well the cone definitely would've been funnier, but a tshirt is such a good idea. I'm glad she's okay!
