Unpurple

So, even though I was so excited when I posted on Wednesday, the day wound up going downhill in the afternoon. There were a lot of factors, but they were not improved by me dropping a purple vase that Torsten gave me and watching it shatter on the floor. Nor were they improved by the fact that when the save-the-dates arrived, I discovered that they did not, in fact, meet my standards for purple.

I realize this is my own fault for not ordering a sample ahead of time, but it looked so pretty on the site. And it was called "amethyst." I have an amethyst ring that Torsten gave me, and it absolutely does meet my definition of purple. I fell prey to marketing and to the cruel inaccuracies of my LCD screen.

However, the STDs are still very nice--good quality paper, pretty font, nice design. And I am probably the only person other than my sister who will look at them and think, "That isn't purple." Torsten thinks it's purple. I think it's an eggplanty pink. Certainly not the gorgeous purple I was anticipating.

But once bitten, twice shy. The second I saw the color of the STDs, I went straight onto the website where we plan to order our actual invitations (not the same vendor) and ordered a sample. I will not make the same mistake twice. And I care a lot more about the invitations than I do about the STDs. Especially because the STDs have only a small amount of (what was supposed to be) purple, whereas the invitations are entirely purple. Oh, yes they are.

So, we'll look at this as a learning experience. And not a reason to get all upset. Oh, and for those people who asked to see the STD? Here is the sample. The real one has our full names and actual URL, but otherwise the wording is the same.

And the other reason why Wednesday went downhill? Well, it might have had something to do with almost getting killed during our volleyball game. We were in a gym that had these big sheet things hanging from the ceiling. It was the middle of our last game of the set, and out of the corner of my eye I noticed movement toward the ceiling. I glanced up to see one of the sheets billowing around, detached from one of the metal rods that had been holding it in place.

And then I saw the metal rod itself start to fall from the very high ceiling. It almost happened in slow motion, it was so surreal. It was surrounded by huge amounts of dust that had been trapped in the sheet--such big pieces that it looked like feathers. It almost seemed like the rod was floating as it made its way to the floor. Until it slammed onto the court, about five feet from where I was standing and even closer to one of my teammates, with a very loud crash.

It was a very heavy rod, about three feet long and over an inch in diameter, made out of very thick metal. Point being that if it had landed on one of us? It literally could have killed us. Which is not exactly the type of thrill I'm looking for when I play volleyball.

The rest of the week has not been much of an improvement, I have to say. It sleeted all last night and we woke up to ice and grossness everywhere--and yet work was not canceled, and I'm extremely grumpy about that. Almost nobody is in the office, though, and while the peace is nice, the dead silence is not exactly a motivating factor.

But what IS a motivating factor is that I'm leaving a bit early today for our drive down to North Carolina. And it's supposed to be 65 degrees and sunny there tomorrow. And also? Tomorrow? Is the big Dress Day. And I am still very excited about that. Don't worry, I packed my camera. There will be a full report on Monday, I'm sure. Until then, have a great weekend!

  5. STDs?! Seriously? That's an acceptable acronym now? Oh, Lordy! I'm LOL over here. What would have made your title especially priceless would have been incorporation of said acronym. As in "Unpurple STDs."

Okay, sorry. Mind in gutter or medical parlance. Take your pick. Glad to hear you weren't garroted by the falling pipe. Have a safe trip to North Carolina and good luck with the dress hunting!

  6. Sorry that your STDs aren't the right purple, but they are really cute! That happened to me too. I picked red-lined envelopes (they looked really dark online) and when I got them they were bright red. Not quite the right color either.

Good luck dress shopping. Those bridal mega-stores are awesome because there are so many dresses in one place. Have fun! =)

  7. I, too, learned that ordering a sample is critical the hard way. Nothing ever looks quite like the picture.

And sorry to hear of your near death experience. Near accidents and stuff like that shake me up for days.

  8. It's dead silent in here too and it makes me just want to fall asleep in my chair.

  10. I think the STD's (which I laugh at every time I read it) are pretty!!

That pole thing is scary!! I would have freaked out. Glad everyone was ok!!!!

And have fun in North Carolina!! Can't wait to hear all about the dresses. :)

  12. So happy you are STILL ALIVE! Sorry your STDs were disappointing. I am SUCH a teenage boy because that abbreviation makes me laugh. Have fun this weekend!

  13. The falling pole story is scary! So glad you are OK. I love the STDs. On my pc they look very purple, not eggplant. Have fun dress shopping!

  14. I found myself laughing outloud at your STD rant because even though I KNOW that STD is wedding lingo, I can only imagine the number of search hits you are going to get on that one!!!! BTW - My wedding some 25 odd years ago was all in PURPLE, down to the cute little cocktail napkins!

  15. dude, every time I read STDs I definitely don't think of Save-The-Dates even though I *know* that's what you're talking about. Ha.

  16. Phew, I'm glad I'm not the only one who was giggling at the STD thing. Wait, let me guess... it was all the single girls, wasn't it?

Also, I find your crazy OCDness about the colour purple to be remarkably endearing... thought you should know :)

It's been snowing since 4am and yet my office is open. Who knew there was a downside to a city that runs on underground mass-transit?

  17. So sorry to hear about your STDs. I have to admit when I first saw STD I thought Sexually Transmitted Disease. Sorry!

I am so pissed to about the ice storm we had. It sucked! I wanted big SNOW!

At any rate, I'm sure you will find the dress of your dreams and have a lovely weekend. Good luck!

  18. How scary that you almost were impaled! Uggg. Even though they aren't the color you like, I think the Save the Date's are very cute.

  19. the save the dates are very cute =) i'm sorry to hear that the real thing wasn't exactly what you were expecting but maybe an important lesson was learned by that - i.e. ordering those samples for the wedding invites!

and phew - i'm so glad to hear you weren't hurt during your volleyball game. that is so, so scary. i hope you have a great time unwinding this weekend.

  20. I think you're the only person I know who is more preoccupied with her favourite colour than I am. (Mine's yellow.)

  21. Purple or not, the STDs are cute and your guests will love them! Though I think ordering a sample invite is very very smart.

  22. not dying ... is a good thing!

p.s. you just got tagged to do a meme on my bloggie!

  23. Maybe the STD colour will be the ONE THING that goes wrong. There you go, it's done with.

Way to go on ducking that beam. That's pretty scary.

  24. Love the polka-dots! And I am trying to keep a straight face about all the STD comments... clearly, I am sick. (wink wink)

  25. I cannot wait to hear about dress day! i also want to know about the plus sized dresses and which designers are awesome and have them because even if my butt is a size six, my chest will be in th 16-18 range. Lovely, eh?

Also, my butt is not a size six.

  26. I'm sorry your Wednesday was so craptacular! But yay Big Dress day! Yay yay yay! I can't wait for pictures!

  27. Scary about that rod falling, I'm glad no one was hurt. The weekend will be great, you already have the weather on your side!

  28. Even though it is not your anticipated shade of purple, it is still extremely cute plus chic. Love the polkas.

Now you know what to do, order samples. Never trust your screen.

Good job on not dying. Scary incident though,

and all the best for the dress day. *so exciting!
    Have a great weekend.

  29. ooh! the dress day! I can't wait to hear about it!

Also purple must be about the hardest color to get right. Sorry it didn't turn out like you planned.

Glad to hear you weren't smooshed by a rod.

  30. Dude, I fricking love the polka dots and I think ordering a sample is always the way to go. I have to plan a party for my company every year and SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE. It doesn't even matter what it costs because you don't want to be stuck with eggplant-pink invitations.

  31. whoa. metal rod falling? no thanks! glad you're ok! I'm looking forward to your wknd update! dresses! whoooo!!! :)

  32. We got sleet/snow/ice crap here in STL too!

Have fun dress shopping in the wonderful weather! :)

  33. I am entirely amused that you have set "standards for purple." And also, that you received a disappointing STD. (Sorry; as someone who is NOT getting married anytime soon, "STD" is an entirely different acronym in my mind, and one that hopefully has NOTHING to do with weddings.) ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm starting to think you like purple. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Seriously. I'm sorry your sexually transmitted diseases weren't as purple as you were hoping. Oh, DAMN. You weren't talking about that, the WHOLE TIME.

(Alright, I'm sorry. I had to. It's what I kept thinking the whole time. ;-) )

    AAHHH! DRESSES! DRESSES!! Cannot wait.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I seriously laughed every time I read "STDs."

Love the polka dots though! very cute.

    ReplyDelete
  37. STD....do people use that acronym for Save the Date cards?
Too funny and sorry about the color.

I saw a magazine in Germany and it was all about purple in the living space. Totally made me think of you!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love that I know what STD stands for now. In both senses of the word!

Learning is good - and at least they are sort of like a trial for the real thing. You're doing such a great job of planning, I love reading all your details and living vicariously through you!

And am very glad you did not get killed. :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I giggle when you use the abbreviation STD. Mainly b/c I'm 5.
I think they look gorgeous though! Very you. Polka dots and purple (ok eggplanty pink) check!

And thank goodness that pipe didn't hurt anyone. A similar thing happend to me in high school. I was inches from being crushed by a falling wing in a theatre. That was awesome.

And wasn't yesterday in NC gorgeous! It was a perfect day for me :) It's my favorite weather!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yikes on the giant falling rod!
And, I'm sorry, I'm so immature that I can't get over the other thing STD stands for.
    *sigh*

    ReplyDelete
  41. You should know.

I was just skimming this at first, when I saw STD. And then I kept seeing STD, and bad things about STD. I was convinced that you were blogging about STDs, for a good ten seconds.

That made me laugh when I re-read, because you're so obviously NOT discussing STDs, well you are, but not the ones I originally thought.

Anyway, they are really cute. And I love purple, and they look plenty purple. Perhaps it's my screen as well.. I hope you keep them. :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I a sorry the STD's were not up to ar with your standards of purpleness...I am glad you are getting a smaple of the invitations as I want you to be completely happy with them...scary about things falling from the sky!

    ReplyDelete
  43. That sure looked purple on MY screen too! Bummer that they weren't what you were expecting. I hope you have better luck with the invites!
