I need a puppy NOW.

When we were in North Carolina, we didn't just look at wedding dresses. We also went to visit the puppy that my parents are going to get next month. This is the puppy that you all suggested names for a couple months ago. My mom wound up deciding on another name, but she still appreciated all of your suggestions.

Anyway, the puppies were born four weeks ago and there were five males in the litter. My parents were third on the list for a male, so they can't choose their puppy until the two people ahead of them have chosen theirs. So we don't know which of the five adorable puppies we saw is going to be theirs. But given the incredible, painful cuteness of all five of them, it hardly matters.

Torsten and I are both dying for a dog, and believe me, seeing these puppies did not help us out at all. By the time we left the breeders' house, I was ready to pack up and move out of our apartment that day. Or even not pack and just leave all our crap behind. Just as long as we could move somewhere that allowed dogs.

It's been two days since we saw them and I still haven't recovered. I need to take them all home with me, now. Seriously, every last one of them. All five. And maybe their three sisters too. I don't care if they pee all over the house and bark all night and roll in their own poo. The cuteness is clearly a defense mechanism so you don't kill them after they've destroyed your home. But as a survival technique, it's extremely effective.

While we were there, I was torn between holding puppies and taking pictures of puppies. I wound up doing more of the latter, but only after some serious puppy cuddling sessions. You can see the full set of photos here.

  1. They're cute! We got our first dog from an Animal Rescue. They had a spot in the mall where they would feature a few animals each week. We went there a few times, and our dog was there. We weren't necessarily looking for a dog, but that dog was there every time, and he was so sweet and older. The last time we went there, we said "If he's there, we need to adopt him." He was and we did. Several months later we adopted another older dog, who has since passed. Puppies are cute, but I would recommend a rescue dog. They need you. :)

  2. We've been dying for a puppy too. 2008 will be the year, I can just feel it.

  3. Can you die of cuteness overdose? Because I just might! I am not really a dog person, but those pictures might just turn that around. :)

  4. 3carnations--I totally agree. I love puppies for their cuteness, but we do plan on getting a rescue dog once we live somewhere that allows pets. My parents actually have a rescue dog too--but they wanted a purebred golden retriever, so for this dog they went to a breeder.

  5. Good Lord. I don't even like dogs but I like these ones.

Also, in regards to your last post, I think you should give Number 6 (the second one your sister tried on) a shot. It's beautiful! I love the bottom. Also, your back up dress is very lovely. How nice to have such a a great back up!

  6. Jess, are you trying to KILL ME!? I NEED A DOG. We are adopting one this year, dammit. But NOW would be best.

  7. Are those goldens? Can you email me the breeder info. We want to get my dad a new puppy and our golden breeder has stopped breeding the line we got our previous goldens from.

    and oh! the cuteness!

  8. I've been wanting a puppy too! Everyone is getting cute doggies. Not like I need another pet, i practically live in a zoo... but still they are SO CUTE!

  9. Oh my word. Even though I just got a new bitty puppy, now I want another one.

    Thanks, Jess.
    :)

  10. Jess, I'm dying for one too. My parents got a puggle which is about the apex of cuteness.

  11. Oh, my. The cuteness! I bemoan Ted's not-puppy-anymore state, but I'm content to admire from afar.

Did I miss it? What's the puppy's name?

  12. Wow - those pups are really adorable. I don't know how you walked away from that place without sticking one in your purse:)

  13. AHHHH! I LURVE HIM!

I already have two dogs, I already have two dogs, I already have two dogs.

  14. PUPPY NOSES. Oh, dying here of cuteness. What a GREAT way to start the day! Thanks for that!

Oh, puppies are so delightful - and so much WORK, too. I want to be sure to have lots of vacation and sick time saved up when it is time to train a new puppy!

  15. OH MY GOD!!!!! look at their hug feet! i remember when my baby was that small.... 10 years ago! oh man, I want a dog so bad too!

  17. aaaaand then i died. of the cute.

  18. Those are some cute puppies! I have too many kids to consider a puppy, but I would gladly visit yours!

    ReplyDelete
  19. OK, those are seriously cute. I still don't want one, though. What is wrong with me?? Am I the only person with no interest at all in having a dog??

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh God, they are so cute! And I totally agree that their cuteness is their defense mechanism. You know, after they chew through the gate and escape, and then after you fix said broken gate, they start working on another section to escape from. :) But then they sit there and look up at you and it is so incredibly hard to be mad because they are so incredibly cute!

  21. Those photos are making me feel the need to go out and adopt a puppy right this very now!

Of course we can't do that, even if I were to get in the car this morning and discover that the car magically drove itself to the shelter. Instead I will be forced to shower the boy in extra kisses and cuddles until the puppy fever passes.

Too bad we live in different Washingtons on opposite coasts, I'd totally invite you to the dog park with us or let you dog sit the boy to get some doggie fixes in!

  22. Oh. My. Gawd. Those are adorable! I'll let you get one and then drool over it's cuteness. NO more animals are coming to live here with me.

  23. oh my goodness, my little heart just burst. THEY'RE SO CUTE!

  24. Squee!!! I want a dog, I want a dog, I want a dog.

  26. They are just sooooo cute and adorable!!! I'm not sure you how didn't just run out with one!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. very cute! even though dogs are a lot of work and you pretty much have to schedule your life around them, i wouldn't get rid of mine for anything!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh god, the cuteness! It hurts! My aunt recently got a new puppy and she's like...maybe two pounds and just this tiny little thing.

I'm happy with my kitties though.

  29. 3carnations said it better than I could, but I just want to second the rescue dog recommendation. In most cases, you're saving their life and I swear they know it.

That being said, the puppies are painfully adorable and I'm jealous that you got some dog time this past weekend!

  30. I cannot even handle how cute they are. I want a puppy so bad. I can't wait until the day that I have a house with a yard for one to run around in. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go back to staring at the pictures and "aww" ing.

  31. OHMYGAWD! I am about to die from the cuteness!! I would love, love to have a puppy again, but I work too far from home to see about it during the day. Luckily, when Kip was a puppy I was in college, so I could go home often and let him out to potty. ~LA

  32. Oh my goodness they are so freaking adorable. I want a puppy badly as well but we can't until we get a house. I hate living in an apartment. I can't wait until we go out puppy shopping!

    ReplyDelete
  33. i was actually awww-ing out loud. those are the most beautiful and cute creatures ever!! are they golden retrivers? i want to know so i can put it in my list of potential types of dogs i want!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. They are adorable. My husband wants a puppy, but as someone who never had a pet growing up, I don't have that animal attachment thing. I'm putting off the puppy for as long as I can - Baby first, puppy second (which is backwards from how most people do it).

    ReplyDelete
  35. That last pic with the huge paws cracks me up - so cute!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. omg omg SOOOO cute! I want a puppy right now too despite that we already have a family dog. he's a 3 year old lab and still all sorts of cute, but i want one to call my own. :) recently in MN there was a breeder that couldn't afford all the dogs (labs at that!) so they're all at humane societies in the cities. I wanted to drive up there so bad and adopt one but my parents were less than thrilled at bringing home a new pup to train. so... i must wait until i'm officially out on my own.

but i think you should get one. ASAP!!!!! and include more pics!

  39. Aw... I've been saying that I need a puppy right now for almost a year! But my dad's allergic, so it's going to have to wait until I have my own place again. That one is super cute!

  44. Those puppies are incredibily adorable! I want one sooo bad!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh gwad... don't they just melt you into little pieces! I'm also desperate for a dog. I want a great dane. Or a golden retreiver, or a choolate lab, or... well anything BIG and drooly with four paws will do the trick I think.

  46. I'm allergic, but I still can't help but adore the puppykins.

    xox

  47. Oh my god! They are soooo cute!! I love animals. I think I'd have a zoo if I could (I'm sure my cats would love that). =)

  48. Wow, that is some potential for cute overload and icanhazcheezburger. Those are my cute definition terms and boy do those dogs FIT!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Holy crap, they are so so so cute.

Sometimes I wish we had a dog, but right now I'm just not ready to put up with the mess and the work. Maybe when we have kids and our house is already a mess and I'm already crazy ;)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Oh my god, the cuteness is overwhelming. Must... look... away... Golden puppy cuteness is too strong for me.....

    GAH!!! WANT.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh my lord. Does it get any cuter than that? No really, does it? Because if there IS something cuter than that last photo- I don't want to know about it. My brain might just explode with happiness.

    ReplyDelete
  52. You need a puppy!

My life wouldn't be complete without my 3 babies.

Those puppies in the pictures are too cute, I think I want another. Uh oh...

    ReplyDelete
  53. So with you on the need for a puppy even though I already have a dog. Today I went to the park and it was full of puppies. Want one now!!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Get one! You need one! My new puppy said you should get one too.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Puppies are amazingly awesome. I especially love the way their breath and feet smell. Feet, I know! Do not be deceived, they are a ton of work. If you don't believe me, look at my blog under the tag "life with dogs". They are totally worth it and I wouldn't do one single thing differently, but don't underestimate what you are getting into.

Now go get yourself a puppy and show us some pictures! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Awwwww...how cute. It makes me want another dog so bad.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh, they're gorgeous! I love dogs! You guys should totally get one...it adds so much fun to a new marriage :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Interesting how babies employ those same sneaky tactics of cuteness....good thing they don't roll in their own poo though. Yech!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh my gosh, they are so irrestibly cute! I just love puppies. Jon and I can't wait to move out of our condo and into a house so that we can get another dog. I feel your pain.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oooohhhh!!! Puppies!!! I do loves me some puppies. And the way they smell? Oh, yeah, bottle that up and I'd wear it behind my ears. Maybe I'll just rub a puppy behind my ears.

The last puppy I had was Elder Hound, and that was over 14 years ago. The rest of our animals have been rescued, and that's probably what will happen again when it's time for another hound. Cats just find us, and move in.

Yay for the puppies, yay for the rescued, and boo to people who make it necessary for the former to become the latter.

  61. I know I already commented on this post, but I just love the last picture where (s)he's looking at his hands. "OMG, are these ATTACHED to me?"

  62. If you do get a puppy, or if your parents visit with theirs, could you, as a public service mind you, schedule kid/puppy/kiss'n-cuddle times at local parks? The Foilkids adore puppies and live puppyless lives as urban youngers. They need your help.

  63. Oh, and Vanessa, w/regard to your cute (and entirely understandable )last comment, enough with the anthropomorphizing: she's a puppy. Those aren't hands. Those are feet. Forefeet, if you will, but feet, nonetheless. I love puppies, but they are still quadrupeds.

(Sorry, I couldn't help myself: I'm the woman who used to correct my roommate's mother when she commented on our cat's forepaw dexterity: "Oh, he uses his hands so well!" So here I am, still snarking, but extending the paw of friendship.)

  64. OMG.. This is adding to my puppy envy. I am missing my dogs like crazy, seriously!
