The bratwurst was a hit.

So, I thought that I didn't have a preference between the Pats and the Giants, but actually? When we were watching the game? I found myself sincerely wanting the Giants to win. Maybe it was Bill Belichick's stupid sweatshirt, or Eli Manning's adorable baby face. But I was totally rooting for the Giants. And my preference was confirmed correct when Belichick walked into the tunnel before the game officially ended. That just screamed of sore loser.

Also, I had a lot of fun at our Super Bowl gathering. It was originally going to include nine guests, but one couple had to cancel at the last minute, so there wound up being seven guests plus the two of us. We had intended to just grab a few things at the grocery store for food, but we wound up going a little crazy at Whole Foods and Giant. That, combined with each of our guests bringing at least one dish, led us into a party that featured the following menu:
  • Bratwurst on baguette
  • Pretzels from the Auntie Anne's DIY kit
  • Edamame
  • Marinated olives
  • Carrots and ranch dip
  • Crab and artichoke dip
  • Salami
  • Aged cheddar cheese
  • Baked brie
  • Garlic melba toast, water crackers, and whole wheat crackers
  • Fresh guacamole, salsa, and tortilla chips
  • Sausage and cream cheese dip
  • Doritos and cheese puffs
  • Hot wings
  • Yellow cake with chocolate frosting
  • Lemon bars
  • Brownies
  • Caramel truffles
  • Four types of beer, as well as soda and apple cider
And the amazing thing? The nine of us managed to pretty much destroy all that food. Yes, there are some chips and cake left, and the dregs of everything else, but when everyone had left and we looked at the table that was once covered with an array of food I thought we'd never get through? It was looking pretty bare.

There's always that letdown after a party, when the last guest leaves and the food is still lying out and the thought of eating anything else makes you want to hurl. But you don't want to leave everything sitting out all night, especially in the apartment that was spick and span in honour of your guests just a few short hours earlier.

And also? It feels late and you're crashing from that sugar high and why is the Super Bowl on a Sunday? Shouldn't it be on a weekend night when you can sleep in the next day and recover from the massive amount of food and beer you ingested?

Although, I did a good job not eating incredible piles of unhealthy food, and also of saving most of my daily calories for the evening so that I wouldn't surpass my weekly Weight Watchers allowance. Go me.

Still, if I don't see another Dorito for at least a month, that will be soon enough for me.

  1. I have to concur about the Doritoes. I ate a crap load of them this weekend and feel sorta queasy just thinking about them. Also, the rest of your menu has made me starving. So, thanks for that.

    :)

  2. I'm not even going to comment on the Patriots loss because tears were shed. And I really can't talk about it.

About the food, though, THANKS SO MUCH for making me absolutely starving for some Doritos at 9am. Glad your party was fun!

  3. oh MAN, even after all the food I ate - all of that still sounded so good to me :) But I am most definitely getting a salad for lunch!

  4. Um, can I got to your parties because it sounds like Yummo central. Though I could barely eat I was so nervous for the Giants the whole time.

Also, Belichick's sweatshirt? So lame. It's his thing.

  5. I'm glad it was a success! and now I'm hungry. You can feel free to send the leftovers my way :)

  6. Isn't Super Bowl food the best? I was very sad the Patriots lost but I told myself it was okay because I had delicious dips.

  7. The same thing happened to me! I can't resist a baby face.

And did you see Belichick's post-game interview? Embarrassing to watch, somehow.

HOOLLLY CRAAAAAAAP i love you giants! i LOVE YOOOUUUU!!

despite the raucus party i attended, i am not hungover because i was too caught up in / nervous about the game to actually drink that much. which is saying something.

  9. In the future please include me in all events that include guacamole. Seriously, I live for that stuff.

I was impartial, and at the end I was really sad when the Patriots lost... until Belichick did his interview and he wouldn't even answer the questions. I mean I know you're upset, but dude, you had a great season.

  10. Sounds like a great gathering to complement a great game. Nice job on staying within your calorie count!

  11. Peyton is better looking. Eli looks 12. Just had to throw that out there.

Oh and also that the Pats are still the better team.

  12. And uh. Blogger works at work today.

    And I want Guacamole.

  13. Oh that sounds like a good party! So many tasty things....well, except the olives. Ugh. Olives!

  14. dude! We had bratwurst too!!!!

For that matter, I'm eating left overs with a baguette today. Hmmm... bratwurst.

Also? I say we petition to have Super Bowl on a Saturday for that exact reason. Seeeriously.

  15. I love sausage cream cheese dip - Yummy! I'm incredibly impressed you were able to stay within your allotted calories. Can I purchase that willpower somewhere?

  16. Whoohoo! Sounds like you had an awesome party for ftball watching.

And btw- my WW starts today. No Butts about it ;)

  17. I want to go to your parties! That spread sounded so good. I'm not that into football but I found myself hoping the Giants would win, too. I think I naturally root for the underdog.

  18. I actually found myself not caring who won, and I didn't watch the last few minutes of the game, which was probably the only exciting part of the whole game. That is what too many margaritas will do to you.

  19. Sounds a lot like the party I attended... massive quantities of wings were consumed. Normally, I am not a huge fan of wings, but these were EXCEPTIONAL!

  20. Your menu sounds way better than ours. Also, we had no Doritos, so I'll eat your leftover ones. :)

  21. Yay Giants! I was the only person at our party rooting for them. And I'm with you on the food... there was SO MUCH. But it was really, really good.

  22. with a food list like that i think i would like football for a night just so i could be invited :)

  23. Holy shit! That is a lot of food!

    How were the Auntie Anne's?

And ditto on the Giants- I really have no affinity for either of these teams, but I wanted Eli Manning to win, and not be the inferior Manning.

  24. You make me hungry just reading this!

  25. I was rooting for the Giants, too. I am sick of all the Tom-Brady-worship. Bah.

Your food list makes me hungry! We didn't do too bad with the junk food, but I tried three different beers and have a wee bit of a headache this morning...

  26. The party sounds like it was a hit.
The menu looks delish!I agree with you about having the Super Bowl on another night - it should be on Friday or Saturday - anyday but one where you need to be at work early the next day!

  27. Ahhh I need lunch!! I just read your list and got insanely hungry. Even reading about olives (which I'm not really a fan of) had my mouth watering. Glad your party was a blast!

  28. Food sounds yummy! WE were stuck at home with sick kids and leftover pizza, but at least teh game was good. (according to my husband, I fell asleep. oops)

  29. I had no emotional attachment to either team but like half way through I found myself really going all out for the Giants. I'm so glad they won. Wheee.

  30. I have been sick for nearly a week now, and reading your Super Bowl party menu is the first time all week that food sounds good. Especially the crab and artichoke dip. And the guacamole, salsa and chips. And the brownies. Oh, and the Auntie Anne's DIY kit! Hello, how did I not know that such a brilliant thing existed? (I have been known to make a trip to the mall simply to get one of their pretzels). I'm lame like that. I've grown to accept it. ;)

  31. Nice spread. I love hosting parties, but I HATE the cleaning up after a party. I always try to pick up while the guests are still there (which is totally rude, I know), so that there is still some of the party energy while I clean. Instead of the sad and tired after the party energy.

  32. your menu sounds amazing...we went to a friend's house where there was supposed to be a bunch of people, but there was only seven of us... our menu featured:

    tortilla chips and salsa

four kinds of cheese, pepperoni, and three kinds of crackers

    cheese pizza

    buffalo chicken pizza (homemade. amazing)

    monkey bread

    sausage and peppers

    yellow cake sith chocolate frosting

    chocolate ice cream cake

    cadbury mini chocolate eggs

i also thought belichek's sweatishirt was stupid. cutoff sleeves? please...

  33. i was so sad the patriots lost. your party sounded like it was so much fun! and you guys had some yummy food!!

  34. Not being a football fan or an American I was surprised at how excited I was to see the Giants win. I mean they totally earned it! How sweet was that last touch down?!

It's nice to see the underdog win every once in a while!

Oh and we've eaten our weight in food the whole month of Jan. I'm struggling to get back on track:) Good for you staying in your points!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I found myself hooting for The Giants in three different languages. A lot of food was consumed, true true!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm SO glad the Giants won! Bill Belichick is an embarrassment when it comes to sportsmanship and fair game play. Those cheatin', self-absorbed arrogant Pats more than deserved to lose. I'm glad the Giants handed 'em their heads! (I obviously don't have an opinion about this.)

As for all that food, ugh. It's just too much, isn't it? Still, if you have Doritos left over, send them this way. The Dirty Bastard Cat will eat them.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Your food sounds yummy! The party we went to had no fresh anything. I ended up leaving to buy a veggie tray so I didn't eat chips and taquitos the whole night.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ooh, the food. I love cheese. Sounds like a good party.

Belichik may have walked into the tunnel before the game officially ended, but give the guy a break! The Pats were almost 19-0, and the Giants were a freaking wild card team. That would hurt for any coach in that position! Sorry, but it's true. :-)

  39. I'm not even sure what sport this SuperBowl is. However I would have watched it to sit and eat the spread you put on, sounds delish!

  40. This is when you beckon your bloggie friends, aka. human vacuum cleaners. I'm more than willing to oblige.
(and I'm secretly eating the weekend's leftover dill pickle chips as we speak...mmmmm)

  41. amazing amazing food list. i am impressed! i have to plan the food for my supertuesday party and this is great inspiration!

  42. The food sounds yummy, especially the brownies! Oh I can't resist brownies...my complete weakness.

I am glad I read your post after dinner. :-)

  43. I really want an Auntie Anne's pretzel now. REALLY BAD.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wow. Sounds like a great party!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Far out that's a lot of (mouth-watering) food.

Good work with the points! I've been struggling with weekends and special events, but am improving.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hot damn! Can I come to your next party?!? My mouth is watering...

Oh yeah, and GO GIANTS! I'm not normally a fan, but being that a.) I live in New York, and b.) I loathe the Patriots with a passion, cheering for Big Blue really seemed the only viable option :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Oh BABY you had me at 'yellow cake with chocolate frosting'. Glad it was a success!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Can I come to your next party? I'm literally drooling over menu.

    ReplyDelete
  49. We had a superbowl party too and there was way too much food! We all went a little overboard, but it was so much fun. Also, I am seriously making a motion to move the game to a Saturday. I had to waste two hours of my precious personal time because I can't drink like I used to and go to work the next day! :(
