Let's talk business. And weddings.

Today I'm going on my first business trip for this job, and my second business trip ever. My last job was in international public health, so I had hoped to get to travel abroad, but it didn't happen. And now that I work domestically, the only business trips I can hope to take are to meetings with clients in other US cities, which is where I'm headed today.

It's only one brief meeting tomorrow morning (and frankly, we're lucky we get to fly down the night before instead of getting up before dawn the day of to take the first flight out of here), but it will be the first night that Torsten and I have spent apart since I went to France without him, back in April. It will definitely be weird, probably more so for him, since he'll be in our apartment and our bed without me. But hopefully he'll look on the bright side and eat a delicious, cream-laden dinner, since I won't be there to cook a nice, healthy Weight Watchers meal. I mean, you have to find the silver lining in every situation, right?

Anyway, I'm actually excited about this meeting because it will be the first time I've met these clients in person after I've spent hours on the phone with them and many, many weeks writing a website for them. It will be really interesting to get to go over the whole thing in person with them and then create Round 2 of the website based on the feedback. Plus, supposedly we're going for sushi after the meeting. This is the type of client I like.

So I won't be posting tomorrow, which means that the wedding stuff I want to talk about is going to be discussed right now instead of waiting a day. I've been browsing wedding dresses online again, because I love wedding dresses and I'm not going down to North Carolina to look at the bridal superstore for several more weeks. I'm extremely impatient about that, because I'm really hoping to find a dress there that I like as much as the one I found a few weeks ago, but for half the price. So, I've been limiting myself to the websites of designers that the bridal superstore actually carries, and trying to find styles that appeal to me.

What's been jumping out to me is a cut that doesn't seem to have a consistent name, but basically strapless with a notched front. It's got a very 1950s feel to it, which I really like, and it feels very me. It's also attractive without being trampy (I hope), and a bit of a change from most strapless dresses. I found a dress with this style that I like a lot, except that it has a bow on it, which I would most likely want to have removed:

So what do you all think of this style, with the little V-shaped cutout at the neckline? Attractive, slightly retro glam, and a little bit different? Or just plain wrong?

  1. I think that is a lovely dress. I like the bow. It's an understated bow.

  2. I think the dress is absolutely lovely! Just make sure the V isn't too deep, but otherwise, I love it! The a-line is so flattering, and you will look GORGEOUS. For sure.

    :)

  3. I love that style. I had a 50's style dress. I love how low cut they are without being vulgar!

    Have a safe trip

  5. Have so much fun on your business trip! Where are you going?

I love that dress, and I really like the bow on it.

  6. The dress is cute, as is the bow. I'm actually a little concerned about what it would look like WITHOUT the bow.

  7. I love the dress. I'd have to try it on to make sure the bow is all right, since I'm quite chesty, but it looks like it's low enough to not be sticking out. And I love, love, love the v-front.

  8. I think that neckline (and the whole dress!) is lovely. I might be nervous about removing the bow because it might change the way the neckline looks- right now the bow is a nice visual stopping point for the notched front, and keeps it from looking too low cut.

  9. oooh i likey! but definitely do away with the bow! and you know what - it could be completely different once you get to the store, and you'll just find "the one". I can't wait till you do! :) have fun away on business!

  10. Business trips are fun! Like you my job only allows for inter-country travel.

I like the style of dress but I'd want it to be cut higher (I have cleavage issues) and if you get rid of the bow, I think it would be nice to have some sort of seaming or a band to define the area that the bow is in because I think it's important to the overall shape of the dress.

(Hah! Who am I kidding? I have no idea what I'm talking about!)

  11. Gorgeous, I love the retro look. I'd agree that the bow needs to go. Have fun on the trip!

  12. I love the dress--it's gorgeous and original and stunning.

  13. So I like the dress a lot, I think it looks very pretty and I love the cut out.

    But.

I know, I know. I'm sorry, but it's the former wedding planner in me that's making me tell you this... There are a couple of problems. Because the V doesn't have support in the form of shoulder straps, it gives way throughout the evening to quite a bit of side boob action. You also need to be VERY, VERY flat chested because there isn't support there and you can end up with a boobs on a shelf type effect. The other thing is, since it's looser at the widest point of your top, it doesn't have support for keeping the dress on your body and you will be tugging it up throughout the night. Now, it could actually fit you perfectly, but these are just some things to watch out for.

  14. love! but.. i've never really understood how those dresses work. like, don't they just... flap open? at the top? do you need to tape the fabric to your boobies to make sure nothing untoward happens while you're dancing?

  15. Its a beautiful dress, but I of the bountiful bosom would worry about spillage... but if you don't have that issue then -gorgeous!
I hope they have one in this style that you can try on!

  16. i love it. i don't even mind the bow to be honest. it's more subtle than gaudy.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I love the neckline. It's unique and interesting. At the risk of sounding crass, will there be alot of boobage?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't mind the bow, but I, too, worry about the boob containage.

  19. this dress is super cute. and I love any throwback to the 40's/50's... but definately ditch the bow. it's just odd looking on the dress.

:) have a good business trip!

  20. Holy crap, love. Love, love and also love. I think it's absolutely stunning.

  21. I love this dress...but you definitely will have to try it on yourself to see. I could never wear it because of my boobs and such, but it sure is adorable.

Have fun on your trip :-)

  22. I really like the notch in the front! Like you said, it is a nice departure from the plain ol' strapless dresses a lot of brides wear.

    ReplyDelete
  23. SUPER cute. And I like the bow as well!

  24. I really like the dress. And I think the bow is nice - not too gaudy or anything.

Where is this dress shop in NC that you are going to? I have a friend who is starting to look at dresses and we live in NC, so I'd love to give her another source!

  25. LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!

And if the bow was just a TEEEEEENY bit smaller, it would be perfection!

I really love it. GREAT taste there friend!

  26. I LOVE the dress. Seriously--the notch really goes a long way towards making it cute and different!!! Great (potential) choice.

  27. That dress is gorgeous! And I don't actually mind the bow, usually i'm against bows unless they are more like a sash (think Clink's bridesmaids dresses) but this one actually works really well with the neckline. Beautiful!

  28. I LOVE it! It's beautiful. :)
    Have fun on your trip.

  29. thanks for the info! and my email is now listed - I'm still kind of new to the blogging thing and didn't realize that I didn'thave it on there.

  30. I like the dress, I like the notch, am not a fan of the bow, but I do like the little bit of gathering/ruching on the bodice. Very flattering.

  31. Oooh, I like it. And I am not much for the strapless wedding dress. This one has the right amount of Glam and Not The Same Old Thing.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love the dress. I like the notch front, makes it a little more unique.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It is great! It is just different enough to really sparkle.

  34. Some of my favorite dresses are from Watters (though I don't like most of them on me). I really do like this one, even with the bow. Fingers crossed you find it in a few weeks!

    ReplyDelete
  35. i really think its lovely.

and it would totally work with a birdcage veil (if you wanted to complete a 50's look)

(this one looks like what i think you would look like in my mind...)

  37. I actually like it, because you don't see a dress like that on every single bride. Tell Torsten to order a greasy pizza - at least that's what I'm eating tonight! Have a good trip!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't like the dress. I'm not sure why I don't, all I know is that I don't. Man I hope I get married one day. Just so that I can wear the dress. Need to find a guy who will put up with my shit first )-:

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm in love with that dress. You will not be looking at that 20 years from now and thinking "What the hell?" And Watters dresses are incredibly reasonably priced. My second choice dress was a Watters.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I like it, but I have the same boob thought that others have mentioned. I have that question about ALL strapless items, though, even strapless bras. How, exactly, do they hold boobs bigger than an A cup up?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oooh, I really like it! I would never have enough cleavage to pull it off, but it would look great on someone with enough boobage :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think the dress is classic and elegant, even with the bow.

Have a great trip! I love business trips!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think the dress is beautiful. I had a Watters dress and it was wonderful - very well made. I'm actually in the real brides section of the website.. I'm famous!

    ReplyDelete
  44. you gotta be careful with that slit if you have any boobs at all! Have fun on your trip. Where are you going?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yep, I dig it. And I'm joining everyone else by saying that I actually like the bow too. (That might be the first time in history that I actually liked a bow on an outfit). Have a safe trip!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think that dress is beautiful. It's very elegant. There's something minimalistic about it, but it makes a statement in a good way. You would be stunning in it!

    ReplyDelete
  47. i think anyone who suggest sushi is ok in my book. and a rockstar if they pay for it. enjoy your travels!

the dress is so pretty and very retro-inspired. i'd can the bow too. i could never wear that style since i've got too much breastage so i will live vicariously through you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I like that dress a lot, but I'm with you on removing the bow!

    ReplyDelete
  49. i like the bow on this dress! my one thing is def make sure the v isn't too deep. especially if you're getting married in a church!

    have a great trip!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. i love the dress, and don't really mind the bow...

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love it. With the bow (but can completely understand if bows are Not Your Thing)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I love the dress. It is gorgeous. I like the bow too, it gives it a little vintage-pradaish feel.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think the dress a lot, too, but am also very concerned about the 'boob logistics.' You'd need to tape yourself in there pretty good and even still I think it could be a challenge. If you tape yourself in there to make sure nothing moves it's going to be difficult to resist the urge not to do the infamous 'strapless hike up' that always happens when you wear a strapless gown. You don't want to feel like you can't move on your wedding day and with this you'd need to be really careful. I hate to be a Debbie Downer. You have great taste and it is pretty...just complicated :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ooh...minus the bow, it's perfectly lovely! I hope they have LOTS of dresses to try on...so fun!!

But sushi...yuck...otherwise, enjoy your first business trip! I always thought it would rock to have a job that required business trips. Cool.

  55. (preface: don't hate me for what i am about to say. truly. but dresses like this, with that adorable notched front, is exactly why i wish my boobs would just decrease in size sometimes.)

i personally find it beautiful and a nice change from the typical strapless dresses. i love it. two big thumbs up.

have fun at the meeting tomorrow and a safe flight.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I love that dress - but then again I really love the bow, so you might want to take my vote with a grain of salt.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Nice dress but I agree, the bow would have to go.
I hate business trips. I get lonely at night in a hotel room on my own. I am such a wuss!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I loved the early days of business travel. Have fun.

The dress looks beautiful, but really I think they all do - it's how it looks on YOU, and well, I think we all need some pictures please.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I agree with Flib - great dress, pretty bow. It's very elegant, but with a little bit of daring sex appeal. Two thumbs up!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Love the dress. Seriously. Love for the dress.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I adore getting to travel, even if for banal reasons to less than glamourous locations.
And I like the V... as long as it isn't too cleavagey!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Beautiful. I'm not a fan of the bow though. Just as long as the V isn't too deep it will be perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love the dress and I even like the bow.

And I'm no bow person, believe.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Ooooh, I definitely like that dress!

And the bow is cute. It's not a crazy in-your-face type of bow... it's understated.
