Stuffed

I have to admit that I'm feeling slightly smug right now, and that's because even though it was Thanksgiving, the holiday of overeating, and I didn't count points between Thursday and Saturday, I lost almost 3 pounds this week. I'm not quite sure how it happened, but I'll go with it.

I'm genuinely happy about the fact that I do not really need to be counting points diligently in order to eat well--Weight Watchers has taught me healthy food approaches and normal portion sizes that apply even when I'm not counting every calorie. This gives me hope for keeping off the nearly 45 pounds that I have lost so far. My first goal was 50 by Christmas, so if I keep it up, that should be no problem. And that's a great start.

Not that Thanksgiving itself was exactly healthy. I didn't stuff my face, but I did try a bit of everything at the table, as did everyone else, and I think that might have been a bad idea, because all of us felt slightly sick afterward. Part of it was that my mom's best friend, who was going to host Thanksgiving this year, wound up in the hospital with a staph infection (she's fine now), so we ended up moving Thanksgiving to our house and sort of rushing through the meal so that we could go visit her in the hospital. It was probably the fastest Thanksgiving meal I've ever eaten. Also, the turkey weighed 26 pounds and there were eight of us. Let's just say there were some leftovers. In fact, we're lucky the damn thing fit in the oven.

Oh, and also? We drove down to North Carolina on Wednesday evening, leaving DC at around seven. Guess how long the drive took? Four hours! Guess how long it normally takes, without holiday traffic? Four and a half hours! What the hell? Seriously, for a while there we were afraid we had the wrong weekend or something. In a good way.

I hope you all had a great holiday. Who's glad to be back?

  1. Ooh, I am SO not glad to be back. Congrats on the weight loss - the entire mini-break's meals for us consisted of carbs, carbs, some more carbs, a little turkey, and LOTS of sweet treats. Needless to say, I will not be weighing myself. Like, at all.

  2. Congrats on the weight loss! It's so exciting to be able to reach such a tangible goal. And being able to change your lifestyle so you can eat healthy, reasonably-sized meals without constantly calculating calories (ooh, alliteration!) is a huge step that many people never take!

I ate way too much this weekend, but I weighed myself and actually weigh less than the last time I was home. I was thrilled until my mom told me her scale was broken.

I am certainly glad to be back, though I wish I could've resolved some family issues before I came back. There's always Christmas.

  5. we had the same experience going up to nj! we didn't leave until 9:30pm (but i usually leave at 9p anyway) and we hit like 20 minutes of traffic, total. and that was in delaware, which everyone knows is an evil and useless state, so it doesn't even count.

man i love thanksgiving. although i am pretty sure there's noooo way i lost any weight this weekend :-)

  8. Wow, your weight loss is amazing!! I think it's really freeing to realize that one day, like Thanksgiving really won't "break the bank" as long as you don't let the holiday portions continue forever! :)

Sounds like a delicious holiday to me!

  13. Congratulations Jess! That is the great thing about Weight Watchers. It gets you thinking about portion control and what foods work for you in a way that tends to stick with you. Good work!

  14. LOL the wrong weekend. Haha. I was lucky to leave on Tuesday and come back on Friday, so I didn't have any holiday traffic.

  15. Eating and still losing weight... getting places quicker than usual during holiday traffic... it's like you're living in some kind of magical backwards world! (How do I get there?)

  17. that's awesome about the weight loss - you inspired me to start up again with WW and while my loss is not as good as i'd hoped, i know that WW is great at teaching you portion control. good job! i wish i could say the same about my t-day feast...

not glad to be back, but the weekend was a whirlwind, so i don't mind so much.

  18. I'm pretty sure I managed not to gain any weight, but that's because (gasp!) I'm not really a big fan of most Thanksgiving-y foods. Except pie. Love me some pie! So I just eat pretty tiny portions of the turkey, stuffing, etc., then eat three desserts. It's all about prioritizing, you see? ;)
