Rainy days

It rained most of yesterday, on and off, and all last night, and now it's raining steadily and shows no signs of letting up. It's supposed to keep raining all weekend, in fact. I don't think we've gotten this much rain since we moved to Colorado. But it's great! I don't mind it at all. It makes me think of happy yards and happy crops and happy farmers. Colorado is a semi-arid state so I think we all appreciate the rain when it happens.

Of course, I work at home so I don't have to deal with commutes that double in time when it rains, or my hair getting all frizzy and my work clothes getting wet. So that helps me appreciate the rain more.

Still, I like it because it's good for us and hopefully it's a sign of good things to come, production-wise, for Colorado farms this year.

Look at me, all thinking about rain in terms of farm production instead of in terms of "Ugh, where's my umbrella?" Is this some sort of sign of being... grown up? Am I the only one who looks at rain this way? What do you think about rainy days?

  1. I can tell you that my kids have been looking forward to a rainy day since they bought new umbrellas with thier Easter money! We haven't had a rainy day since!

  2. Ha! Thanks for the perspective, Jess! My husband is at home right now rushing to get the lawn cut before it starts raining tonight and continues ALL WEEKEND. I've been feeling grumpy about it, but you're right - the farmers totally need it. :)

  3. I love the rain, too, for similar reasons...the world just looks like how I feel when I drink a glass of water after going all night without any--the way your mouth is kind of tight and hard and dry, and you can feel the cells plumpening up as you drink. That's what it looks like the ground is doing.

I don't even mind driving to work in the rain. I mean, this is a situation where driving really beats biking.

The only thing that makes me sad is watching the petals get washed off the flowering trees. I've waited SO LONG for those flowers.

  4. As long as there's not rain every day or lots of times a week, then I like it. It can be very relaxing.

  5. I don't mind a rainy day or two one bit. I missed rain so much when I lived in Vegas! I never want to have exclusively sunny weather again.

  6. I used to like rainy days before I had a toddler who is obsessed with playing outside. When it rains, he stands at the glass door and begs, "Outside? Outside? Outside?"

  7. We're supposed to get rain all weekend. So much for a fun spring visit from my dad! Oh well. I appreciate the rain because it means we don't have to water our lawn and raised flowerbeds. But, I hate the rain for all your reasons (commute, clothes, hair).

  8. I actually dislike them since it means my daughter can't go outside and play. :)

  9. I love rain. Just not right now as it's leaking all over our floors.

  10. It is supposed to rain all weekend in Chicago and I'm a bit bummed. Although I AM glad that means it's not cold enough to snow!

  11. As a fellow Coloradoan and a denizen of a rural agrarian area, I feel the same way: let it rain, just stop in time for planting and harvest! Especially as long as it is rain and not hail and wind. {*grin*}

  12. Interesting perspective, although I wonder if it is somehow less 'grown up' if you think about whether you have an umbrella when it's raining. Lucky that you don't have to commute in the wet stuff though!

  13. Ha ha! That is funny. I think of rain like that a bit, but I definitely think of snow that way. Each storm I think about how the snowpack in the mountains is going up!

  14. I totally feel ya! We haven't had much rain here AT ALL. In SEATTLE! And we had a really hot, dry summer last year. So I'm actually hoping we get a little more rain for the fruit and veggie crops.

And when it doesn't rain for long periods of time, and then it finally does, the reprieve is usually really nice. The air smells so fresh and clean, and everything seems to be more alive after the rain. And you can curl up with a good book and a cup of tea and get all snuggly.

  15. Once the weather turns nice here, we all feel this... desperation to spend every! waking! moment! enjoying it. Rainy days give us a free pass to be lazy and sit in front of the tv.... so one or two here and there are great.

  16. I had a friend who once said, "Well. It is supposed to rain, but I like food so (insert shrug)."

I think it is a most excellent outlook, personally. :)
