New header

So, last night I changed my blog format slightly. Not a complete redesign, and it certainly didn't cost me any money. But now I have three columns instead of two, a new tagline, and a new header (made using my very limited Photoshop skills). Someday I will probably hire a designer who knows what they're doing to do a real redesign of the site, but in the meantime, now that we're a single-income family, my own amateur work will have to do.

Still, I'm not displeased with the results. I made a few other options, all more Colorado- and mountain-oriented, and I liked some of them a fair bit, but they didn't fit with the gray and purple color scheme I have going on with the rest of the blog, and I just couldn't bring myself to get rid of the purple. I know, I'm probably overly attached, but I just couldn't do it.

Anyway, here are the other headers I made:

I do like a couple of them quite a bit, but I think for now I'm going to stick with the lightning. Maybe someday I'll get rid of the purple on this blog, but somehow it feels like it wouldn't be... me without the purple.

What do you think?

P.S. If you feel like reading some content that isn't actually ABOUT the blog, head over to Bodies, where I'm talking about my awesome new heart rate monitor.

  1. Love the new header! I think it is great for the winter months especially and the lightening bolt fits the tagline perfectly.

  2. I like. I need to add the third column, too. Thanks for the link the other day.

  3. They are all awesome! Way to go. And the lightening is beautiful.

  4. Way to go, Jess! My design skills are VERY limited, so I applaud you!

I love them all, but the lightning one is kind of rad.

  5. Ooh I like this one the best. The picture is the prettiest/most season-appropriate, plus it's still purple! I love it.

  6. I like it a lot. But I also like the second banner down - maybe for a more summery feel? How did you add the third column?

  7. I think the lightning looks fab with the purple. And if purple is you then stick with it!

  8. When I see that header, I get a sense of seriousness. Which, in some ways, your blog is (though not always). I do love the sun photos (c'mon, you live in the land of 300+ days of sun per year!). Maybe there's a compromise out there. A brighter picture with snow, where you could still use purple lettering? Anyway, for now, I'll enjoy the change-up. Nothing wrong with doing things a little different every now and again!

  9. The lightning works perfectly with the purple. I love that first photo too, though.

Weird - I was just browsing through new Worpress themes for my site just a few minutes ago!

  10. Looks great! I have very limited photoshop skills too, LOL. This looks good! I like the others you made as well; especially the first two.

I sort of feel like you need some purple though too! haha. (Purple is my favourite colour as well!)

  11. I really like the first and second headers the best. Love the new look!

  12. Love the lightning - we need more of that in Colorado. So regarding your heart rate monitor, I've been totally annoyed with mine. I feel like going at the "fat burning and cardio" rate is less than just walking the dog. I know that I'm not at my peak, just a predetermined peak by a company that makes exercise equipment. It kills me to work out that slow, but I've been thinking that if I follow their directions, maybe I'll be able to work out harder, I just can't talk myself into going slow.

  13. I like them all. It's fun to change things up.

  14. It's lovely Jess, I like it! I like the other ones you made as well. You could easily change them out when you feel it. The third one down looks like it would look nice with purple since it has the bluish shades of the mountains, but I know it can be hard to tell in the small sizes.

  15. those colorado mountainy ones do seem very "you" now, although purple is obviously even you-ier. (like that word??)

  16. I like it! I also really like the 2nd one in your post. :)

  17. you need to have some purple :) i like all the headers you created though. cool!

  18. It definitely wouldn't be you without the purple! (Which makes me want to go on a mad hunt for some purple mountains' majesty and all that).

  19. I like the one you have up now... And I also like the third one. Great job!

  20. Your skills aren't as limited as you are claiming, Jess! I like the second one best out of the ones that weren't used.

  21. I like it! I also like the bottom two of the rejected ones.

  22. I really like the new header, as well as the other ones you made. Must admit I am not much of a fan of three-column layouts, though (unless they are very wide), because I like the content column to be wide.
By the way, there are several free Blogger layout websites out there, that do entire layouts. I don't know if you would be interested in that but here are a few: http://www.almostreadyblogs.com/

  23. Dude! I LOVE those headers. Except for the part where they make me want to come visit Colorado. Because I can't quite afford it and BOY do I want to go.

  24. I love all of them but the third down is my favorite!

  25. Get ready- designing your header gets addictive.

  26. Ooooooh! Pretty!!

I also love the third one down, I think you could probably make it work with the purple scheme you have going.

And I feel like I must mention that while your last header option is terribly classy and fantastic in every way...it is definitely not a Colorado landmark. It is definitely a Utah landmark, one of our most famous, actually. One that has been on our license plate for about 15 years. Sorry hon.

  27. The more you play around with your own code, the more you'll be able to understand how blog templates are put together and before you know it, you'll be creating your own design from scratch--without having to spend a penny!

  28. I think it looks scarier than you are. But I agree that it seems like purple is essential.

  29. I like #3 - but the lightening is fun too!
