Sometimes the weather is INTERESTING, okay?

So you know that cold front that's supposedly sweeping the country? Well, living in the west, we got ours before a lot of you got yours. It has not been above freezing since... the weekend? Maybe? The temperature has been in the MINUSES for the last few nights. But the storm seems to have broken? It's supposed to be 40 degrees today. Forty. That's ABOVE FREEZING.

When it started I had a small panic attack about how when we researched Denver before moving here, everything we saw and everyone we talked to told us that the winters here are actually fairly mild, and apparently THEY WERE ALL LYING. But, I have since drawn the conclusion that yes, it's cold, but it's abnormally cold EVERYWHERE right now and no, this isn't normal. And I can take the occasional frigid cold snap as long as I know this isn't STANDARD, you know?

Though apparently we're all hunkering down for a harsh winter this year. Something about an El Nino summer and some sort of almanac prediction? Really, I don't know. But at least Denver is sunny, even when it's cold. Still, I'd love some new windows. And maybe some more insulation in the attic. Because last night I was on the couch in the living room? And the heat was on and I was wearing long underwear under my jeans? And yet I was SHIVERING. Because the couch is in the bay window, and sometimes it feels like WHY BOTHER even HAVING a window?

In other words: BRRRR. Please please please let the mercury rise today. I would like to be able to leave the house again sometime soon.

How cold is it where you are?

  1. Not cold at all. It's been hovering around freezing, which feels relatively balmy compared to where I spent last December. Edmonton has been -20ish all week.

  2. it's 24 in Philadelphia right now which is cold for us in December -- today we have a high of 31 and a low of 22 -- I slept wedged between 2 cats last night! I can always tell when it is cold outside as the cats are all over me!

  3. It's -6 right now, but with the windchill factor it feels like it's about -20 or so according to the news. Frickin' cold, in other words. It might get into the teens this weekend. That's our heat wave, at least until February or March, when we might get a day or two above freezing.

  4. We haven't had much snow, but it's been in the teens most nights. What was really bad was the wind storm that blew in and stayed while the weather dropped to 15.

I put fresh water out for our outside dog and cat yesterday and 3 hours later it was frozen. I HATE COLD WEATHER!

  5. It has been really really cold in Chicago lately. Yesterday it was -20 with the wind chill. Its cold in the winter here but not usually *this* cold! Man, winter came in with a roar this year.

  6. In Erie, PA it's in the teens but our bigger problem is the snow.

We got 1/2' ish last night and should probably get at least another foot by tomorrow. They closed the interstate so you basically can't travel North anywhere (into Buffalo).

  7. We've been having lows in the teens and highs in the 20's-low 30's for about a week here in Portland. We've been breaking record lows every night. BRRR!

  8. It isn't that cold here, that is, for the rest of the country. For the south, it's literally freezing. Well, feels like freezing. It's about 35 degrees and it feels like 30. Tonight, it's going to be a whopping 27 degrees. Ahh!

Though, recently, the highs have been in the 50s, so there's nothing really we can complain about. Well, maybe there is. No central heating could be one thing. brrrr. That means more snuggling with a Petey dog :)

  9. It's in the 20's here and I live in THE SOUTH. VERY South. brrrr.

  10. The forecast for tomorrow in Perth, Western Australia is 37 degrees (96.6F) and Sunday is 39 (102.2) so miserable, but in the exact opposite way to yours. Generally it is this hot (between 91 and 113F) every single day from now until the end of March. YUCK!

Thankfully I am heading to New Zealand on Wednesday where the days should be around 25C (77F).

I would prefer cold because you can layer up but it is difficult to feel cool when it is 113F every day! Giving up my lovely mild weather in New Zealand to live here shows how much I love my husband!

  11. It's exceptionally cold at my house today because we have new windows (frames and all) being installed and its only 19 degrees out today.

My lucky husband is monitoring the process. :)

  12. COLD! -20 today, more of the same for the forseeable future. Don't laugh, but Homer got me one of those Snuggi blanket things for my birthday a few weeks ago. Everyone else in my family is getting one for Christmas - we fight over who gets to sleep with it each night! It seems like a ridiculous concept, but it's soooooo warm!

  13. Ready for my Colorado Winter survival trick for these cold spells?

3M Window Insulator Kits. They're plastic film installed over your windows and they are a life saver. Go to home depot, buy a few, install them on the windows in your most spent time in rooms (our living room and bedroom). It provides an extra barrier. Not the prettiest thing, but if you pull it tight enough and trim the edges, almost can't tell it's there. You NEED it, especially if you have old windows.

And yeah, it's gonna be a snowy winter. Although, El Nino usually dumps our biggest storms in the spring. This is a cold spell, we'll be back to 300 days of sunshine soon.

  14. It's 32 here today, which is cold enough for me! Next week it's supposed to range from the low-50s to mid-60s. We're having such weird weather going back and forth between cold to semi-warm.

  15. Currently, 6 degrees. We also just received about a foot of snow on Wednesday. It's supposed to be in the 20s this weekend, and I'm actually looking forward to it!

  16. Supposedly its 32 in NYC, but its SO WINDY so it feels worse. :( BLAH!

  17. Right now it is 14, which is highly unusual for Eugene, Oregon. But the best part is that we might get FREEZING RAIN later today. What's better than freezing rain? Brrrrrrr. Hope you have a cozy weekend.

  18. It's been in the single digits here ... -20 including wind chill, but like Denver, it's supposed to warm up in the coming days. I think it was in the teens this morning and it felt downright balmy.

Funny you heard winter is supposed to be worse because of El Nino. I heard it was supposed to be more mild. Gah.

  19. Right now it's 3 degrees, but the wind chill makes it feel like -9.

And actually, it's such a warmup from earlier this week that I'm not even wearing my gloves outside.

  20. Well, I live in Atlanta so it's not as cold as Denver, but it was 28 this morning when I woke up. The high is around 40 today. That's pretty chilly for us, especially so early in December.

And I know what you mean about drafty windows. Sometimes I feel like I'm sitting outside when I'm on my couch.

  21. I'm a closet weather junkie, I have to admit it's my favorite part of the news! Here it has been in the high teens and low 20's for about a week. 32* today (with snow flurries) and it feels so much warmer!

    ReplyDelete
  22. It has been colder than snot here in Seattle this week! Mostly in the single digits and teens at night, and upper 20s/lower 30s during the day. It feels a little warmer today, but apparently we're supposed to get some snow...But next week is supposed to get back up in the 40s and that sounds darn right balmy to me! But I am SO thankful that it has been sunny here! Winters here are mild, temperature-wise, but the gray. The 6 months of gray and rain and not seeing a drop of sunshine is REALLY difficult. So this sunny weather is wonderful, the mountains are visible and covered with lots of snow! I love it.

  23. Anchorage has had a fairly mild winter so far. It's only dipped down below zero for a handful of days. It's currently around the midteens. I've found this enjoyable as I've been able to walk to work for all except like seven days so far this winter.

  24. It has been so miserable! It has been steadily in the -20s and -30s. Gah.

It is supposed to get up to 27 today and I cannot contain my excitement or cabin fever.

  25. Of course, I have to be the one from Orlando, Florida and say it was a BALMY 84 degrees yesterday. It rained all day however and is now down to 60. For here, that is cold! But, yeah, sorry about that :o)

  26. i live in adelaide, australia - it is a lovely 27 degrees here at the moment! that is about about 80 degrees in fahrenheit.

  27. 48 degrees in San Francisco and I'll take it!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I live in Australia too... Brisbane, Queensland. Everyday this week has been over 30 degrees Celsius with is upwards of 86. I am looking forward to having a white Christmas one day :)

  29. Bloody cold. Around 4 degrees C in the day, below freezing at night. But I think that's typical for December here (Bristol, UK).

    ReplyDelete
  30. 30 degrees in Chicago, the lowest it'll be is in the 20s as a high. That's not too bad. Better than -10 which it was on Wednesday. That was nasty.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 72 degrees. I know, it may be pretty hot for you guys over there but it's considered pretty cool for us over here. It's so hot usually, never above 85 degrees though luckily. I hate hot weather. Swap?

  32. I cannot warm up. It's hovering around 10 degrees without the wind chill in MN this week. Below zero temps at night.
