Wooden tulips

You guys had some great suggestions for those bottom shelves. I'm thinking I'm going to do a combination of all the different things. The shelves get progressively closer together as they get higher, so if I use a basket to store practical things it would have to be a tall one in order to avoid having everyone see right into it, which would sort of defeat the purpose. So I may just stick with some pretty boxes, maybe some candles, and hopefully a fake flower arrangement. However, instead of silk flowers, I think I'm going to go with wooden ones.

What I really want is the wooden tulips that are apparently for sale all over Amsterdam, but are surprisingly difficult to find in this country, even online. Etsy yielded nothing. Google found me a couple things that are similar, but not quite what I'm looking for and also expensive for what they are. I want what can apparently be bought for cheap at any Amsterdam market, like this:

(Image from here--and by the way, the pictures in that post make me actually want to visit Amsterdam, and not just for the tulips.) Seriously, I know Holland is famous for its tulips and all, but why can't I find tulips like that here? I really want them! And I have absolutely no plans to visit Amsterdam anytime in the near or even not-so-near future. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can obtain some of these for a reasonable price WITHOUT paying for a plane ticket? Because the price in that photo is right--10 for 5.5 Euros. I would totally buy 20 or 30 and put a big colorful jar of them on that shelf, and not worry if one fell down and broke.

My point, really is this: dammit, why don't we live in Holland? Grrr.

In other news, I went to the doctor the other day, and it was one of the best doctor experiences I've ever had. Seriously, I'm still so happy about it. I wrote about it over at Bodies, so go check out the details! I cannot get over how pleased I am about how everything went. Well, almost everything.

OK, now that we're done with that aside, can we get back to the wooden tulips? I WANT THEM. Is there a secret Amsterdam-style market somewhere in Denver that I should know about? Can someone please present me with an ingenious solution to this problem? Anyone?

  1. I have no solution for you. Just wanted to say that those wooden tulips are really, really pretty. AND I've dealt with international currency just enough to have a conversion website bookmarked and you can get 10 of those bad boys for $8.15 USD. WANT.

  2. I don't know about Denver, but have you ever heard about HOLLAND, Michigan? That town is all things Dutch. Seriously. They have a Tulip Time festival every spring. And, well, it's uncany. IF there's going to be shops that sell wooden tulips, my guess is there will be one there. Why not do a Google search on stores there and start making some calls?!?

  3. I found a couple of websites that you probably found while you were searching for wooden tulips on Google. Here's one: http://www.amazing-roses.com/-c-23.html and by the way, I looooooove tulips, and I was disappointed that I couldn't get them at my wedding for cheaper. And springtime-ier.

  9. My sister's friend at Nike is doing a stint in Amsterdam for work. She's an awesome woman, so I could hook the two of you up if you'd like her to send you some.

  10. OK, I wanted to say this yesterday in response to whoever suggested a fake plant or fake flowers, but didn't...

But now, I will: NOOOOOOOOOOOO! No fake ANYTHING! As a former florist, I beg you not to go there!

Wooden tulips = cute, classy, not trying to "be" flowers. Silk flowers = should have stayed in the 70s and 80s. :)

  11. those wooden tulips ARE adorable! and it's confusing why they wouldn't be readily available here in the states, when clearly they're lovely and people should want them :-)

  14. I'm not sure they're the same thing, but I've seen wooden tulips at the Colorado Mills mall. There's a store near the Target that sells ...um, mostly Crap It's Hard To Picture Anyone Wanting, to put it bluntly, but I've noticed their wooden tulips in the window several times and have thought about picking some up. I think they're about $1 each or less if you buy 10, something like that. If you go through Target and take a left out of there to the mall the store is on your left, maybe 3 or 4 in? Anyway - might be worth looking if you're ever out near Golden.

  15. I just want to say a giant "word" to rosalicious. Silk flowers--aaaccck! I have warned all my family and friends that should they ever attempt to memorialize me (once I'm gone) with fake flowers I WILL HAUNT THEM. ;)

  17. I live in Ottawa, Canada, and every year in May we have a week-long tulip festival. Wooden tulips like these are quite easy to find during the festival and I even have some at our house right now. Let me know if you can't find any anywhere and I'll pick you up some in the spring.

  18. Michael's Arts and Craft stores have tons of wooden items that you can paint yourself with acrylic paint. I don't know for sure if they have the tulips, but you should definitely check because their prices are great!

  21. My mother had this same problem of finding these wooden tulips. You need to do search in dutch: houten tulpen (wooden tulips). Try this site..they have them.
