Trees and premieres and invitations, oh my.

So, it rained all weekend, and particularly hard on Sunday evening and all through the night. The culmination of the storm was at 4:30 on Monday morning, when Torsten and I were awakened by a huge thud that I, in my half-asleep state, thought was a garbage truck slamming a dumpster back onto the ground in a particularly ferocious manner.

But no. It wasn't a dumpster. It was a tree. A very large tree. Landing across the residential street behind our building, and crushing about six cars in the process. In the morning there was a police car out there, and some car owners taking photos of the damage for insurance purposes, and one dumbass trying to climb over a waist-high downed power line to get to his car rather than walking around the block, until the cop stopped him by turning on his siren.

Anyway, as of this morning the tree was still there, surrounded by Do Not Cross barriers with two crushed cars underneath it. Crappy way to start out the week, huh?

In other news, I know I don't normally get all pop-culture here on the blog, even though I do love Red Carpet Fashion Awards for its non-ironic, very interesting take on fashion and read it every day. But as you probably already know, I adore Sex and the City, and I can't wait for the movie to come out, and last night was the premiere in London. (And also, um, why London? Wrong city! But let's move on.)

So anyway, Sarah Jessica Parker being known as somewhat of a fashion icon, and her three co-stars attempting to keep up, I was dying to see what they all wore to the premiere. And they did not disappoint. I knew SJP would be outrageous (I swear that hat is almost as tall as she is), but wow, was I ever not expecting to see quite so much boob from Cynthia Nixon. My. Goodness. The only one who disappointed me was Kristin Davis--that neckline is way too Charlotte.

Oh! And also yesterday? My sister and I assembled a mock wedding invitation, and it looks SO GOOD. It has wrong colors and crooked cutting and everything, because it was just to get an idea of how it would all work, and yet I am in love with it, because it is so nice and it is also OUR WEDDING, for REAL like IN PRINT. So we went to Paper Source and bought all the supplies, and even with unexpected things like 12 rolls of double sided tape and a circle cutter and all number of random other extras, it still came out to way less than what we would have had to pay for a very simple invitation from an actual store.

AND this invitation includes all sorts of amazing little details that wouldn't have fit our budget if we'd ordered them pre-assembled, like vellum envelope liners with silver leaves, and a pocket with scalloped edging and polka dots, and oh, it's perfect, just perfect. And I know I totally rolled my eyes when people talked about how your invitation matters because it is the first picture that people get of the wedding, and therefore it's representative of you and your wedding plans. But actually? This invitation is so perfect, and we both like it so much, that now? I totally understand that concept. And I feel like we totally nailed it.

Even though the assembly is going to be SO MUCH WORK and I'll probably be posting in a month about oh my god WHAT WAS I THINKING is it too late to just order invitations from a store and have someone else do all the dirty work? And that's when it will be YOUR job to point me back to this post and remind me why I'm doing all this work. Because they are perfect. And that is worth the work. So once I'm knee-deep in hole punchers and bone folders, remind me of how great the finished product will be, would you? You guys are the best.

  1. We just received a wedding invitation in the mail that featured two deranged-looking squirrels tying the knot. It was kind of freaky, but like you said, I'm sure it's indicative of how the whole wedding will be. They are a strange couple.

Glad yours turned out so well!

  2. I hadn't heard about the SATC premiere! Seriously, why London? What sense does THAT make? London is not The City!

  3. I thought CN looked AWESOME! I did have a problem with SJP's hat though. I can't help it. I thought it was silly. And seriously, why are they having the premiere in London?! Lame.

  4. I thought the same thing about the London premiere strangeness - I have been looking forward to May 30 for quite some time! That is so awesome about your invitations and so exciting. It all is going to be so perfect for you guys!

  6. This is how it felt for me, when it came to the table decorations ... for the invitations, I went pretty simple, but classy- cause that's the kinda girl I AM! But I wanted the tables to be really great. I stressed out the most over the ones outside under the pine trees and they turned out PERFECT PERFECT PERFECT I loved how people went off and gathered under them, with the candles burning. It was nice!

Your invitations will be TOTALLY worth the work and you need to remember to frame one!

The invitations sound nice! Please post a photo when you're done so we can all see it!

  9. wow. at least you didn't park your car there. i've had tree limbs land on the roof of my car, but not crush it.

  10. Sweets and I have an appointment with Paper Source this week. And after your positive experiences there, I think we'll look into all options, including assemble at home!

  11. I am so disappointed that they chose London over the City for the premiere - what is up with that? I loved all the dresses but they should have been here AND we shouldn't have to WAIT until the May 30th dadgumit!!!

PS Can't wait to see your invitations, I do so hope you post a picture of them when they are complete and sent out!

  12. I too LOVE sex and the city and I am so there opening day to see the movie.

I'm happy you've decided to put your blood, sweat, and tears into making your own invites. Makes them all the more special. Good luck! I'm sure they will turn out fabulous. How many do you need to make anyway?

  13. The premiere was in London?? You're right; that is just wrong. You're also right that Cynthia Nixon is looking particularly un-Miranda-like in that outfit. Regardless, I think she's working it.

Congrats on the invitations! Just put yourself on a schedule to do a certain number a week and you'll be fine.

  16. You're so awesome...I love that you're making your own wedding invitations. If I hadn't had 400 invitations to send out, I might have considered the homemade route.

    Cheers to you!

  19. I'm going to be back in the States for all of twelve hours before I fly home from Thailand. McGee and I have vowed to see the movie, regardless of how exhausted or jet-lagged I am.

    I can't wait!

  20. Oh, now I'm all in the mood to drag out my supplies and start making cards again. Like I need another distraction away from the manuscript. Sheesh.

We had a relatively small branch hit part of the roof of our house and I thought the world was coming to an end. I cannot imagine the sound of a big one playing CRUNCH with some cars.

(slightly embarassing personal note: I've never seen Sex in the City. Never. Probably won't see the movie either. I'm. so. out of it.)

  21. The rain on Sunday sucked TOTAL ass.

    Seriously.

  22. Smushed car is a crappy way to start the week.

Glad your invitations turned out the way you wanted them to. I admire your craftiness and the fact that you have them picked out and your wedding is still so far away. I'm a total slacker! =)

  23. I hated that hat. I know it's very SJP, but I thought it looked dumb. And it made me think about how she would have to take it off to see the movie because it's SEVEN FEET TALL. It's weird to wear a seven foot tall hat to see a movie.

Also, Yay! For your invites! I'm a nerd and I had so much fun putting mine together.

  24. You're going to have a blast doing the invites! you really will :)

  25. My thoughts exactly on -SATC. London really?

  26. The invites are going to be SOOOOO GREAT! So worth it.

Also Cynthia Nixon has been looking fantastic lately!

  27. I am so excited to see the SATC movie. I can't wait!
The only down side is as May 30 approaches I can no longer avoid seeing clips from the movie. Even better, later in the summer we FINALLY get another X-Files movie. If I only see those two movies all summer I wouldn't even care.

Your invitations continue to sound more fabulous every time we hear about them. They are going to be absolutely perfect, and so worth all of the crazy amount of work that will go into making them!

  28. I MUST bookmark that style blog, it's great!

And WOW. Those poor people with their cars under the tree. That truly sucks.

  29. Sex and the City movie! So soon! Weee!

    Okay, girly moment has passed...

Anyway, good luck on your invites! It sounds like they're going to be gorgeous and so *you*

  31. I have SUCH an unhealthy level of excitement for the SATC movie, it's not even funny! And I agree about the fashion choices, the dress was way too Charlotte for me too.
You need to post a picture of the invitations once you finish one up.. I wanna see! =)

  32. I just read in some trashy tabloid somewhere (aren't I specific? maybe US Weekly?) that SJP was voted the UNsexiest woman alive by Maxim magazine.

I want to give those editors the finger FOR her. I also love Sex and the City, and agree: that red dress is BLAH. Although I'm less excited about the hat and more alarmed.

  33. I am SO excited about the SATC movie! It premieres here on my Birthday! Girls night! Woo Hoo :o)

  34. Cynthia looks amazing! Can't wait for the movie!

Yikes to the tree...what neighborhood are you in?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Are you going to post photos of the invitations? Because They sound amazing and I'm dying to see :)

And the cops should have let that idiot try to climb over the power line... That kind of stupid is natures way of weeding out the imbiciles.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm a sucker for a good chick flick as well. If I can find the time, I'm going to see the SATC movie as well.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Cynthia Nixon: YUM.

So, I'm assuming you'll eventually post pictures of these lovingly handmade wedding invitations? They sound so fabulous, I'm actually curious about them (and I'm never curious about stuff like this.)

    ReplyDelete
  38. The invitation making sounds all crafty and exciting! I think it's great you're doing them yourself. My motto? If you want something done right, then do it yourself! Have fun! :)

  39. Your invitations sound so nice! I am seriously counting down the days until the SATC movie comes out.

  40. Ok, SJP's hat kind of freaked me out. I can not wait to see your invites.

    ReplyDelete
  41. oooh i want to see a photo of the fully assembled invite!

and sjp pulls that outrageous hat off quite well!! i agree with you about kristen davis...

  42. I can't wait for SATC, and I LOVED Cynthia's outfit. Go the Mirandas of the world- we can clean up good ;-)

I love the feeling of the wedding coming together. For us it hasn't been the invitations yet, but so many bits and pieces that reignite my enthusiasm, and make it really easy to imagine the day.

  43. wow that crazy about the tree! I hate those kinds of storms. They freak me out way too much.

Hooray for perfect invitations! I hope you'll post a picture when all is said and done. They sound beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Glad no one was hurt when the tree fell. Looks and sounds like a pretty bad storm!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I bet they'll be beautiful :) I made the invitations for our rehearsal dinner, and while it was only about 25 invitations, it still felt good to have actually made them myself. Plus, it was fun :)
