Eight months on Weight Watchers

I've been doing Weight Watchers for eight months now. And to be frank, it's getting a little dull.

It's still working. I lost almost four pounds last week. That's probably the thyroid hormone starting to work? If I lost four pounds every week I'd be thrilled. But I don't believe that I will. I guess check back in a month and see. But seriously? I doubt that will happen. I imagine I'll just keep on the way I am, losing 1-2 pounds almost every week.

And honestly? Consistency is boring.

For awhile I was traumatizing myself because I wanted to lose X amount of weight by the wedding. I was all freaking out whenever I didn't lose at least 8 pounds in a month because that was my target plan. But then I realized that's insane. I started Weight Watchers before I got engaged. I did it because I wanted to be healthy. I was trying not to focus on weight and numbers, but instead on health.

But it becomes so easy to be consumed by the scale. And the scale helps. It keeps me honest, it helps me stay on track, and it reminds me of what great progress I'm making.

But setting stupid goals like I have to lose eight pounds each month until my wedding is just ridiculous. What happens if I don't? I'll be ugly? Everyone will laugh as I walk up the aisle because I'm over Maximum Respectable Bride Size? Nothing.

In fact, what I learned when I tried on wedding dresses is that I will feel beautiful on my wedding day even if I don't lose another pound between now and then. Seriously. I don't know if it's the love and the emotion or just the great cut of the dresses or what, but I will feel good. I know that.

And now that I've bought a dress that can be altered as much--or as little--as necessary, I'm not worried about fitting into it. It will fit me when it arrives. If I'm smaller by my wedding day, I'll get it taken in. It will be fine. It will fit. It will look good on me.

So no more obsession with reaching a target weight by the wedding. I don't care how long it takes. I will lose all my excess weight eventually. It doesn't matter how much of it is lost before the wedding and how much is lost after. It will happen. Because I want to be healthy. And so that's what I'm going to keep focusing on. Because that's what this has been about since the beginning.

  1. I love how you've ALREADY DECIDED that you're going to be beautiful no matter what. You WILL! We should all treat ourselves so kindly.

  5. I think the hardest part about losing weight is the mindset, and you already seem to have that part nailed. So, YOU GO GIRL. Yes, I am white, and totally cannot pull that off, but that's how I feel. Congrats!

    :)

  6. Same thing happened with me and WW, it just got old after a while but you seem to have the appropriate attitude while I was like "...annnnnnd cookies."

  8. That's such a great attitude to have. It's so easy to get caught up in the numbers game when it should be about your health and how you feel.

  10. What a great post. That is the only reason really to lose weight - your health and well being.

I too had some number set in my mind of what I should lose by W-day...but somewhere along the way, I realized that it didn't matter. And it didn't.

  11. This is exactly the attitude I need to adopt. Thank you.

  12. That's the spirit! Your wedding day will be fabulous and you will be gorgeous. The Weight Watchers journey will take you well beyond that one (awesome) day and set you up for all the great things that are still to come.

  13. I think you have such good perspective on the whole thing. It's so easy to start thinking that it's about reaching a certain weight or fitting in a certain size, when that has NOTHING to do with health or fitness. Not that the aesthetics of weight loss aren't nice or important, but they are certainly down there on the priority list compared with things like avoiding heart disease, diabetes, stroke, etc! Not to mention just feeling strong and full of energy. Which is how you always sounds to me, so I think even if you never lost another pound you'd still be an inspiration to all of us!

  14. You've done an awesome job thus far, and even if you don't lose any more weight look at what you've accomplished!

Now as far as being bored... I totally get that. Every time I diet I get so annoyed at like the 3 month mark. Thank god for netflix and the revolving list of workout dvds I've been getting.

  15. You are gonna be gorgeous! And I'm glad you realize that! I've seen some amazing pics of WW members since I joined- so keep going! Your wedding date shouldn't be your goal weight date. You already look fabulous just the way you are!

  16. You're right - you will be beautiful! NO matter what!!!
I think losing 1-2 lbs a week is still awesome though. :)

  17. Good for you- it is so hard not to get caught up in wedding weight, especially with all these bride boot camps and whatnot.

  18. Good for you honey! You are going to be gorgeous on your big day no matter what and I'm glad you already know that! Keep up your good work though! :)

  20. You have a GREAT attitude. You are already beautiful inside and out. And Torsten loves you! What more could you want?

Also, I am sure you know this, but 1-2 pounds per week is perfectly healthy, sustainable, keep-offable, etc. You are going to get even healthier before the wedding and after it!

  21. It took me a minute to comment because I was staring at the puppy. The puppy!

I think you have an amazing attitude about weight loss. I tried WW and it didn't work for me, I didn't have the patience. But you're right -- you are going to be a gorgeous bride no matter what the scale says!

  24. I feel like this entry was a message to me, a much needed one. Thanks Jess.

Your way of looking at things makes sense so why aren't more of us with body image issues doing it?

And you're so right that you will look gorgeous on your wedding day because you are gorgeous already.

  26. I love the "What happens if I don't?" part. That's something I should ask more often when I'm running around in a panic about something.

  27. It sounds like you've got a great plan in place and you're working towards a goal. I salute you.

  28. Good for you for having a healthy attitude. It really is all about your health when it comes down to it, that's what learning to eat well, working out and taking the weight off is all about. Bonus if you look fabulous in your dress (which you will :)

  29. I love your positive outlook on your body and weight loss. No one should feel like they need to be a size zero to be considered a respectable bride weight. We are real women with real curves (that men love). Why should we feel the need to starve ourselves to fit some sick twisted skinny mold?

Yay for you for trying to be healthy and knowing that you will be a beautiful bride, no matter what!

  30. You have such a beautiful attitude surrounding this. For me the scale is evil or angel. Yes the number keeps me honest, but its hard to have a great day when it creeps back up. You seem to have found the true beauty which is love yourself truly no matter what.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Great attitude! You are SO MUCH WISER than your years.

  32. For fun you could try a trendy diet, like a pineapple and diet coke diet, and then maybe weight watchers will seem a little more aluring after that.

I hear you on the steady and dull thing. I think that's why I can never stick to a diet for very long.

  33. Good for you. You will be beautiful on your wedding day and it Won't depend on an arbitrary number.

P.S. me and my scale are not talking.

  34. That's great. And you'll be beautiful in your dress.

  35. woohoo! yay, gorgeous wedding dress! you're so right.. it's just The Right Dress, Period, so a scale number is irrelevant to how it looks on you :-)

  36. Good for you Jess! That's what it's all about.

  42. you should be a leader when you reach your goal. seriously! its so inspiring, your outlook! when i was losing on WW too I'd freak out when my loss would be tiny! But the meetings totally helped to put it into perspective. and today, your posts reminded me of that feeling of hope and determination

  44. you're totally going to look ridiculously awesome. obvi. You have such a great attitude and I love it because the scale is a stupid stupid stupid way to measure progress.

  45. I love your confidence. Being healthy is what it is all about, not by the number on the tag of your pants. If you feel good, that is what matters. And...from the sounds of things you're perfect! :-)
